Clemson student-athletes had strong semester in classroom

CLEMSON—Over 50 percent of Clemson’s student-athletes were on the academic honor roll for the Spring semester according to data released by Clemson’s Office of Institutional Research. Seven of the 15 programs had team GPAs of at least 3.0 and the overall GPA was 2.92 for the semester, third highest on record. There were 114 student-athletes on the Dean’s List, including 39 who posted a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester.

The programs that posted a 3.0 or better were the men’s soccer (3.16), women’s soccer (3.40), women’s swimming (3.28), men’s tennis (3.04), women’s tennis (3.04), women’s track (3.23) and rowing (3.13) teams.

The number of sports programs with a 3.0 or better is testament to the impact Vickery Hall and its staff has had on the academic performance of the Clemson program. Clemson had just five total programs with at least a 3.0 for the eight semesters prior to the opening of the facility in 1991. Now there are seven different programs in one semester.

The women’s track (6th), women’s tennis (9th) and rowing (12th) teams are also ranked in the top 15 in the nation in their latest respective sports polls in addition to achieving a team GPA of 3.0 or better.

For the first time ever, all 15 programs had at least a 2.50 GPA in the same semester. The seven teams with at least a 3.0 GPA rank just one short of the record of eight different programs with a 3.0 in one semester.

“I am very pleased with our student-athletes academic performance, especially when it comes to consistency and across the board performance,” said Clemson Athletic Director Dr. Terry Don Phillips. “Becky Bowman and her staff continue to do a great job in this important area, and the head coaches of each sport are to be commended because academic performance is obviously a priority with each program.

Many sports had outstanding semesters. The women’s soccer team had the highest team GPA with a 3.40 semester, its 19th consecutive semester with at least a 3.1 team GPA. Twelve members of the team had at least a 3.0, including seven who made the Dean’s List. The men’s soccer team also had a strong semester under Head Coach Mike Noonan with a team GPA of 3.16, the fourth best for that program since 1987.

The Clemson football team posted a 2.56 GPA for the semester and 33 of the team members had at least a 3.0. It is the third straight semester the football team has had at least 30 members make the academic honor roll, the second longest streak in the program’s history (four in a row in 1999-01). The list of academic honor roll members included first-team All-American DeAndre McDaniel, starting center Dalton Freeman, who made the Dean’s List, and first –team All-ACC tight end Michael Palmer, who had a 4.0 and graduated in May.

Both basketball teams had solid semesters even though there was a change in coaching leadership. The men had a 2.64 team GPA, the third best figure for the program since 1984. Brad Brownell’s Tigers had six members on the academic honor roll, including guards Tanner Smith and Andre Young. The Lady Tigers had a 2.57 team GPA under Head Coach Itoro Coleman and five members were on the academic honor roll, including senior leader Lele Hardy, who graduated in May, and Lindsay Mason, who had a perfect 4.0.

Clemson’s women’s track program had a 3.23 team GPA and a record 30 student athletes on the 43-person roster made the academic honor roll, including a record 21 on the Dean’s List. The list of Lady Tigers on the academic honor roll included on the track stars Patricia Mamona, Kim Ruck, Liane Weber and Linda Buchholz.

Clemson’s swimming program continued to have an outstanding performance in the classroom. The women’s program had a 3.28 team GPA, the 19th consecutive semester with at least a 3.2 team GPA, and 18 of the team members made the Dean’s List. The men’s program had a team GPA of .2.98 and 15 student-athletes on the academic honor roll

The rowing team had the most members on the academic honor roll with 42, including a program high 22 on the Dean’s List. Richard Ruggieri’s team will compete as one of 16 teams in the NCAA Rowing Championships this weekend. The team had an overall GPA of 3.13.

Both Clemson tennis teams were over 3.00 and in fact had the exact same GPA (3.04).
