CLEMSON — For most people, the day after Thanksgiving is a day of eating leftovers and shopping for Christmas. But at Clemson University, students and Tiger fans will gather for a different kind of “Black Friday” event.

In preparation for Clemson’s football matchup with the University of South Carolina, the Student Alumni Association will host “Black Friday: Cocky’s Funeral,” a pep rally and mock funeral, at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, in the Outdoor Theater. The pep rally will feature Clemson’s cheerleaders and Rally Cats, the Tiger mascot, an appearance by President James F. Barker and a performance by the Clemson University Gospel Choir.

Sandy Edge, adviser in the College of Business and Behavioral Science, will give the eulogy for USC’s Cocky mascot, which will be followed by a funeral processional led by Clemson’s Army ROTC Tiger Platoon and will conclude with the burning of Cocky.

After Cocky gets “cooked,” fans at the event can dine on chicken sandwiches provided by Chick-fil-A. Long-sleeved T-shirts commemorating the event will be available for $15 while supplies last.

“Clemson is full of traditions, and this is a rich tradition we want to pass on to future Clemson students,” said Hunter Wilson, a junior industrial engineering major from Columbia and leader in the Student Alumni Association. “This will be a great event for Tiger fans to get together and rally around a common cause: beating Carolina.”

“Black Friday” is free and open to the public.
