Men’s Basketball Team Records Best Semester in 13 years

Clemson, SC—Five Clemson athletic teams recorded GPAs of 3.0 or better and 47 percent of the student-athletes made the academic honor roll, according to the student-athlete grade report for the 2010 Fall semester released by the University’s Office of Institutional Research.

The overall GPA of Clemson’s 19 athletic teams was a 2.88, the second best fall semester on record. A total of 217 of Clemson’s 458 student-athletes in the study were named to the academic honor roll, including 109 on the Dean’s List.

“This report certainly speaks well to the job being done by Becky Bowman and her staff at Vickery Hall,” said Clemson Athletic Director Terry Don Phillips. “They put in countless hours and we are all proud of their work. It also speaks well for the commitment of our head coaches and their staffs and the emphasis they put on academics.

“I am particularly pleased with the performance of both basketball teams and the job both first-year coaching staffs are doing in this area.”

The Clemson women’s cross country team posted a 3.62 GPA for the fall semester, the team’s highest on record and just below the all-time record for any Clemson athletic team in history. The record is a 3.64 team GPA by the Clemson women’s tennis team in the Spring of 1995.

The Clemson women’s swimming program had a 3.55 team GPA for the fall semester, the 23rd consecutive semester of at least a 3.0 for that program. The 3.55 mark was the best on record for that program, breaking the previous best of 3.51 set in the Spring of 2005. Chris Ip’s women’s swimmers had 30 student-athletes on the academic honor roll, including 23 on the Dean’s List and nine who had perfect 4.0 GPAs.

The nine women’s swimmers who posted perfect semesters in the classroom were Meg Anderson, Kristin Bender, Kelly McGee, Kerry McLaughlin, Deanna Piper, Sarah Smith, Rachel Sparks, Garrison Stevens and Maddie Tarantolo.

The other programs who had a 3.0 or better were the women’s soccer team (3.18), the men’s swimming program (3.01) and the rowing team (3.00). It was the 21st straight semester with at least a 3.0 for the women’s soccer program, while the rowers reached the 3.0 mark for the 24th time in their 25 semesters in existence.

First-year Clemson basketball coaches Brad Brownell and Itoro Coleman got off to great starts in the classroom in the fall semester. The Clemson men recorded a 2.76 semester, the best for that program since a 2.77 in the Spring of 1997 when the Tigers reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Tigers had a 2.75, its best since the Spring of 2007. It is the first time since the Spring of 1997 that both basketball programs had a 2.75 or better.

The men had five student-athletes on the academic honor roll, including starters Devin Booker and Tanner Smith, who both made the Dean’s List. Earlier this month, Smith was named to the CoSIDA academic All-District team. Six of the 13 Lady Tigers were named to the academic honor roll including Lindsey Mason, who made the Dean’s List and Kaitlyn Cranshaw, who had a perfect 4.0

Clemson’s baseball team, ranked in the top 10 in the nation according to most preseason polls, had a 2.75 team GPA. Jack Leggett’s team had 12 on the academic honor roll, including six on the Dean’s List. Starters Brad Miller and Richie Shaffer were among the academic honor roll selections.

The Clemson football team had a 2.41 GPA. Thirty-two of the student-athletes made the academic honor roll, including 11 who made the Dean’s List. Starting punter Dawson Zimmerman had a 4.0, while starters Brandon Maye, Jaron Brown and Dalton Freeman all made the Dean’s List.

Clemson’s women’s track program, currently ranked fourth in the nation, had 17 team members named to the Dean’s List and 24 on the academic honor roll. All-American Kim Ruck was one of the athletes on the Dean’s List.
