Clemson, SC -- Clemson University student-athletes posted a 2.79 GPA in the
classroom for the first semester, the highest average on record.
Addtionally, 251 student-athletes, managers and trainers achieved honor
roll status, the highest total on record. Statistics were released by the
student-athlete enrichment staff at Vickery Hall Staff on Friday.

The 2.79 GPA for the student-athletes was just .03 off the figure
for the Clemson student body overall (2.82).

Five different teams earned their highest fall semester GPA on
record, including the Clemson football team, which had a 2.46 team GPA.
That 2.46 figure was the second highest on record for any semester, second
only to the 2.49 posted by Tommy Bowden's team in the spring semester of
last year.

The Clemson football team had 41 players earn at least a 3.0 for
the first semester, the highest total on record. Among the players who
were on the list were first-team Academic All-Americans Kyle Young and Chad
Carson. Clemson was the only Division I program in the nation to have two
first-team Academic All-Americans in 2000. Seven starters this past
season, Young, Carson, Justin Watts, Will Merritt, John McDermott, Jackie
Robinson and Braxton K. Williams, made the academic honor roll.

Other sports programs with their highest fall semester on record
were the golf team (3.19), women's track team (3.09), women's soccer squad
(3.05) and men's soccer team (2.96). In fact, the figures posted by the
golf team, women's track and womens soccer teams were the highest for any
semester.

It was an especially outstanding year for the women's teams at
Clemson. The six Clemson women's programs had an overall GPA of 3.00,
above the 2.97 for all women in the student body. Five of the six
programs had a GPa of 3.0 or better, led by the women's tennis team's 3.18.
