Clemson Releases List of Secondary Violations

CLEMSON, SC -- As is their policy to do twice a year Clemson released their NCAA secondary rules violations. The names of the sports, coaches and students involved have been redacted by the university.

Violations can be classified as either secondary or major. Secondary violations are those that provide only a limited recruiting or competitive advantage.

June 5, 2001 -- Violation of NCAA Bylaw 13.1.3.1.1 This Period for Telephone Calls-General Rule. Assistant coach made an impermissible call to a high school underclassman.

-- Results: reported to NCAA. Resolved -- Coaching staff not allowed to call PSA for two weeks.

July 23, 2001 -- Violation of NCAA Bylaw 13.2.2 Specific Prohibitions (Offers and Inducements)(g). Prospect-aged child of a coach received therapeutic treatment at no charge.

-- Results: reported to NCAA. Resolved – treatment value under $100.00 – reinstatement not sought.

July 23, 2001 -- Violation of NCAA Bylaw 15.5.3.1 Maximum Equivalency Limits. Team limit exceeded for almost four months when institutional grant was credited to student-athlete's account by financial aid data entry staff. Student-athlete did not notify the head coach or compliance services of award. -- Results: reported to NCAA. Resolved – Student-athlete declined the award and account debited. Overage corrected prior to end of season. No further action.

September 27, 2001 -- Violation of NCAA Bylaw 13.4.1 Printed Recruiting Materials. Administrative assistant provided recruiting materials to high school juniors prior to September 1. Reported by to administrative assistant.

-- Results: reported to NCAA. Resolved -- Letter of admonishment issue to administrative assistant.

October 26, 2001 -- Violation of NCAA Bylaw 14.1.4.1 Drug Testing Consent Form. Students who were participating in open walk-on tryouts were allowed to practice prior to completing the drug testing consent form.

-- Results: reported to NCAA. Resolved – Letter of admonishment issued to staff member.

October 26, 2001 -- Violation of NCAA Bylaw 13.1.1.1 High School Prospect. An assistant coach inadvertently met with a high school junior during a recruiting trip.

-- Results: reported to NCAA. Resolved – Coach received letter of admonishment. Team required to count the impermissible contact and number of remaining permissible contacts for prospects reduced by one.

January 28, 2002 -- Violation of NCAA Bylaw 13.6.4 Transportation of incoming student-athlete. Spouse provided prospect with the transportation to campus.

-- Results: reported to NCAA. Resolved – Coach issued letter of admonishment. Compliance director notified of restoration issue by NCAA student-athlete reinstatement staff. Eligibility reinstated without penalty.

January 28, 2002 -- Violation of NCAA Bylaw 13.1.2.1. Permissible recruiters. Coach's child aftended dinner during prospect’s official visit.

-- Results: reported to NCAA. Resolved – Head coach received letter of admonishment. Repaid cost of meal. Prospect's eligibility reinstated.

March 20, 2002 -- Violation of NCAA Bylaw 16.8.1.2.3 Meal Allowance Limitation.

Student-athlete mistakenly received incorrect per-diem for meal while traveling.

-- Results: reported to NCAA. Resolved -- Student-athlete repaid difference to the institution.

March 26, 2002 -- Violation of NCAA Bylaw 16.12.1 GeneralRule. Student-athlete

erroneously received extra benefit of watching in-room movie at hotel.

-- Results: reported to NCAA. Resolved -- Student -athlete repaid the cost of the movie to the institution.

March 19, 2002 -- Violation of NCAA Bylaw 16.12.2.1 General Rule. Parent of student-athlete received extra benefit of hotel housing due to hotel error.

-- Results: reported to NCAA. Resolved -- Parents repaid benefit to the institution. Student-athlete’s eligibility reinstated.

March 19, 2002 -- Violation of NCAA Bylaw 16.6.1 General Rule. Hotel room of parents of student-athlete inadvertently billed to institution.

-- Results: reported to NCAA. Resolved -- Parents repaid cost of the room to institution.

March 27, 2002 -- Violation of NCAA Bylaw 16.12.2.1 and 16.12.2.2.2 General

Rule and Telephones and Credit Cards. Student-athletes gained access to coach's long-distance access code end made telephone calls without charge.

-- Results: reported to NCAA. Resolved -- Student-athletes paid cost of telephone charges. Money donated to charity. Student-athlete’s eligibility reinstated.

March 29, 2002 -- Violation of NCAA Bylaw 16.12.2.1 & 16.10.1(e) General Rule and Local Transportation. Student-athlete was provided local transportation by individual.

-- Results: reported to NCAA. Resolved – Student-athlete donated cost of mileage to local charity. Student-athlete’s eligibility reinstated.

April 2, 2002 -- Violation of NCAA Bylaw 16.12.2.1 General Rule. Parent of

student-athlete received transportation, meals end discounted lodging while attending championship event.

-- Results: reported to NCAA. Resolved -- Student-athlete declared ineligible.
