Clemson Refuses Comment on Coordinator Positions |
CLEMSON - Clemson University is refusing comment concerning Tuesday's reports that Tigers' offensive coordinator Mike O'Cain and defensive coordinator John Lovett had been fired by head coach Tommy Bowden.
TigerNet's (www.tigernet.com) Tiger Source editor Mickey Plyler first reported the news early Tuesday afternoon. Later, other internet sites also reported the story. However, school sports information director Tim Bourret, responding to an email inquiry on the matter Tuesday, said there was "nothing scheduled and no announcements at this time." There is speculation that an official announcement could come early next week. A year ago, when Bowden reshuffled his coaching staff following the Peach Bowl win over Tennessee, several newspapers and Internet sites reported the story nearly a full month before the coach or the school spoke about it on the record. After a slow start, Clemson's defense came on as the season wound down. The Tigers finished 31st in the country in scoring defense and 29th in total defense. But the offense, in O'Cain's first year as coordinator, never got off the ground. Clemson finished 109th out of 117 Division I-A teams in total offense.
