CLEMSON FOOTBALL

Clemson - Virginia Pregame Notebook

by - Correspondent -

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - A group of reporters waiting for the end of a Clemson

football practice earlier this week found themselves talking about their own

embarrassing moments on the field.

Naturally, the question was posed to Tommy Bowden once practice ended, and he

didn't hesitate.

"No doubt it would have to be the time the one-armed guy caught a touchdown

pass on me," he said with a laugh.

Bowden explained.

"I'll never forget the guy's name - Sam Guy," he said. "We were playing

Phillip Barbour High School (Bowden played at University High in Morgantown,

W.Va.) and I'm at cornerback. They do a little play-action pass and I move up

and let this guy go past me. There ain't no way they're throwing this

one-armed guy a pass.

"Sure enough, when I bit on the fake and let him go, he did a little take off

route and they threw to him, he caught the ball and fell into the endzone for

a touchdown. It was early in the game, but it ended up beating us 14-12."

Guy, too, went on to bigger and better things. He's now a doctor near

Charleston, W.Va.
