Clemson - Virginia Pregame Notebook

by - Correspondent -

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - A group of reporters waiting for the end of a Clemson
football practice earlier this week found themselves talking about their own
embarrassing moments on the field.

Naturally, the question was posed to Tommy Bowden once practice ended, and he
didn't hesitate.

"No doubt it would have to be the time the one-armed guy caught a touchdown
pass on me," he said with a laugh.

Bowden explained.

"I'll never forget the guy's name - Sam Guy," he said. "We were playing
Phillip Barbour High School (Bowden played at University High in Morgantown,
W.Va.) and I'm at cornerback. They do a little play-action pass and I move up
and let this guy go past me. There ain't no way they're throwing this
one-armed guy a pass.

"Sure enough, when I bit on the fake and let him go, he did a little take off
route and they threw to him, he caught the ball and fell into the endzone for
a touchdown. It was early in the game, but it ended up beating us 14-12."

Guy, too, went on to bigger and better things. He's now a doctor near
Charleston, W.Va.

After having only seven catches for 80 yards in his first three games this
season senior WR J.J. McKelvey has totaled 15 receptions for 240 yards in his
last two games; is sixth in the ACC in receptions (4.4) and receiving yardage

FSU ... Simmons is fourth in the ACC in total offense (218.0) ... the Tigers
lead the ACC and are 12th in the nation in total defense allowing 281.0 yards
per game as compared to 395.0 yards allowed per contest last year.

Virginia's Matt Schaub threw for 315 yards and one touchdown and the
Cavaliers extended their winning streak to four-in-a-row with a 27-22 victory
over Duke ... Schaub has passed for over 300 yards in each of his past two
games and is second in the ACC and 4th nationally in passing; has thrown 15
TD passes over his last five games ... Schaub has thrown a TD pass every 10.5
pass attempts - the third-best figure in Division I-A among quarterbacks with
10 or more TD passes ... UVa has out-scored their opponents 124-to-63 in the
second half this season ... true freshman Wali Lundy leads the team in
rushing (277 yards) and receptions (27) ... Lundy is second in the ACC in
kickoff returns (26.5) and is fourth in all-purpose yardage (125.2) ... Billy
McMullen moved into ninth on ACC career receiving yardage list (2,508) and is
tied for 12th in career receptions with 167 ... the Cavaliers have allowed
only six quarterback sacks on the season, tied for the second-best mark in
the ACC ... LB Darryl Blackstock had nine tackles against Duke and leads all
