Checking in on Clemson commitments

Several Clemson commitments were in action last Friday night in what was the season-opening week for many high school teams.

Quarterback Tony McNeal of Chester High School started out hot, completing his first seven passes for 76 yards and two scores in the second quarter, and finished the first half with a 22-yard scoring strike to Tevin Worthy. Overall, McNeal was 13-for-20 for 162 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. The interception was returned 78 yards for a touchdown, but Chester rolled to a 57-6 victory. On the season, through two games, he is 27-for-40 for 434 yards with 8 TDs and 1 INT. Chester hosts Lancaster this Friday.

Offensive lineman Shaq Anthony of Wren graded out at 88 percent, including six knockdown blocks, in the Hurricanes’ 35-20 loss to Palmetto, and he returns to action this Friday when the Canes host Riverside.

Wide receiver Charone Peake of Dorman High School, listed as No. 12 on the ESPNU top 150 list, was injured during last Friday’s 21-12 win over Gaffney. Peake had a 7-yard touchdown called back because of a penalty, and three plays later got hurt on a 12-yard reception that put the ball on the Gaffney six-yard line. He never returned to the game. Overall, he had two receptions for 20 yards and also rushed three times for 19 yards.

DB Adam Humphries, also of Dorman, recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass while recording four tackles in the win over Gaffney.

OL Ryan Norton (Mauldin, SC) graded out at 91 percent in Mauldin's 32-7 win over arch-rival Hillcrest.

DB Cortez Davis (Mainland, FL) had a game-high two receptions for 34 yards and logged six tackles and three passes broken up in a 14-0 loss to a school from Mississippi.

DL Joe Gore (East Columbus, NC) returned a fumble 27 yards for a touchdown in a 32-12 win.

DL Grady Jarrett (Rockdale County, GA) had seven tackles, including four for loss, and a fumble recovery in his team’s 6-3 victory over Winder-Barrow.

TE Eric MacLain (Jack Britt, NC) had one catch for 23 yards in a 27-6 win over Hoke County, and for the season has three catches for 45 yards.

ATH Robert Smith (Woodland, SC) was 16-for-33 for 132 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT, while rushing 20 times for 90 yards in a 31-20 loss at Fort Dorchester

LB Colton Walls (Charlotte Latin, NC) had three tackles in a 60-0 win over Mt. Zion.

DT DeShawn Williams (Central, SC) had eight tackles, including three for loss, in a 6-0 Lion loss at Easley, and will play this Friday night in Sirrine Stadium as the Lions travel to take on Greenville.

OL Isaiah Battle (Blue Ridge, Va.) and RB Mike Bellamy (Charlotte, FL) have their first games this coming weekend. RB Marlin Lane (Mainland, FL) is still recovering from an ACL injury and likely won’t play until mid-season.

Also, some of Clemson’s targets were also in action: TE Jay Rome (Valdosta, GA) had four catches for 62 yards. QB Tamyn Garrick (Williston, SC) was 16-for-26 for 208 yards and two touchdown passes. QB Morgan Roberts (Charlotte Country Day, NC) was 5-for-8 for 160 yards and two touchdowns.
