Charlotte QB waiting on Clemson offer

Charlotte Country Day quarterback Morgan Roberts watched the Clemson at Auburn game on television a week ago, and he watched Clemson quarterback Kyle Parker take shot after shot. And continue to make throw after throw.

That part of Parker’s game impressed the 6-4, 208-pounder.

“In that game, he showed how tough he is,” Roberts said. “He took a shot and I think 90 percent of the quarterbacks in the NCAA would have sat down and been happy to watch the rest of the game. He is extremely tough, and I was impressed with that. He sat in there [the pocket] and took some shots and made some great throws.

“That throw to Harper in the end zone was an amazing throw. A lot of quarterbacks can’t make that throw because their eyes are not down the field. They feel the rush and want to scramble. He was throwing that ball as he was taking a hit, and that is what impressed me about him. Clemson pretty much won the game on every level except the scoreboard, which is pretty rough.”

Roberts, a pro-style quarterback, has offers from Western Carolina and Dartmouth and is still waiting for the Tigers to offer. He has interest in Clemson, North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Wake Forest, and said he will make his decision when the time is right.

“I don’t think it’s necessary to do something quick, and I don’t think I will wait til signing day next year,” Robert said. “I am just waiting on the right fit, and I will know when that is. I haven’t set a date or anything like that. I just want to go out and play. My focus is on winning games, and when the time is right I will make the best decision I can.”

Roberts said that Clemson is a place he can definitely see himself a part of in the future.

“That whole program is a big deal,” Robert said. “The following that they have and the fans make it a big deal. They care about the team and Tiger football and that makes you as a player want to come and play for Clemson. Coach Swinney is an awesome guy, and [offensive coordinator Billy] Coach Napier and I have gotten to know each other. The coaches are great and the campus is great, and it would be a great place to go and play football.”

Charlotte Country Day has jumped out to a 4-1 start, and Roberts has thrown for over 800 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has also scored six times on the ground, and said he is comfortable running the ball – but he would rather throw.

“I have a 100-yard game [rushing] already, and had 70 yards this past Friday night,” Roberts said. “I like to just stay in the pocket and check down, and hang in there. If something breaks down, then I don’t have a problem running. This year, we have a lot of designed plays for me to run the ball. I am pretty confident in my running game, but I like to sit in the pocket and check through my receivers.”

Napier attended one of Roberts’ games a few weeks ago, and Roberts said it was nice to have the attention.

“I knew that he was coming beforehand, and then I saw him wearing his Clemson stuff on the sideline,” Roberts said. “But I just tried to focus on the game, and I really didn’t try to focus on him at all. It was a great atmosphere, and it was fun to have him there. But he was the last thing I was thinking about – I was thinking about winning the game.”
