CLEMSON FOOTBALL

CU Athletes Establish Records In The Classroom

by -

Clemson, SC - A record seven Clemson athletic teams posted a team GPA of over 3.0 in the spring semester of 2001 according to statistics released by the school's athletic council on Thursday. For the fifth straight semester the overall GPA for the student-athletes was at an all-time high, this year reaching 2.80. That is just .02 below the average for the overall student body, the closest differential on record.

A record 28 student-athletes were named to the President's List (a perfect 4.0) and a record 97 student-athletes made the dean's list. Overall, 215 student-athletes had a 3.0 GPA or better, nearly 50 percent of the 441 student-athletes in the 19 varsity programs at Clemson.

Six Clemson programs posted all-time high team GPAs for a semester. That list included the Clemson football team, which had a 2.58 team GPA, significantly ahead of the previous high of 2.49 set in the spring semester of 2000. Tommy Bowden has been the head coach at Clemson for five semesters and his team has had five of the top six semesters on record. Thirty-seven Clemson football players made the academic honor roll, the high total among Clemson teams for the semester.

The list of football players on the academic honor roll included Kyle Young and Chad Carson, first-team Academic All-Americans during the 2000 football season. Both had perfect 4.0 GPAs for the second semester. Young, who graduated summa cum laude in May, will play his final year of eligibility as a graduate student. Carson has over a 3.9 GPA heading into his final year and is considered to be a Rhodes Scholar candidate.

Other teams that posted all-time high GPA semesters were men's soccer (3.29), women's soccer (3.13), men's swimming (2.83), women's swimming (3.22), and rowing (3.30). The men's swimming team also had a record 12 student-athletes on the honor roll (3.0 or better).

The women's tennis team had the highest GPA with a 3.38, the team's best semester in six years. The men's golf team, which finished second in the nation at the NCAAs, had a 3.12 team GPA, its fifth semester out of the last six with a team GPA of 3.0 or better. The volleyball team had nine members on the student-athlete honor roll, tying an all-time record.

Many student-athletes were all-conference on the field of competition and were named to the academic honor roll. That list included Lady Tiger basketball star Chrissy Floyd, record setting women's soccer goal keeper Katie Carson, All-America swimmer Ginny Kirouac, and all-conference rowers Lucy Doolittle and Aimee Fox.

Much of the credit for the improvement of Clemson's student-athletes can be traced to the construction of Vickery Hall, the university's academic learning center for student-athletes. Since it opened in 1991, the overall GPA of Clemson student-athletes has risen from 2.33 to 2.80.

"The student-athlete enrichment program is very proud of the success our student-athletes have achieved," said Bill D'Andrea, director of the program. "We appreciate the support cooperation we receive from our faculty, coaches, athletic advisors and administration in assisting our student-athletes reach this level of academic achievement."
