Bowden Suspends McDuffie for Wake Forest Game

CLEMSON - Intentionally or not, Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden announced a one-game suspension for defensive tackle Chris McDuffie Tuesday evening.

Speaking to reporters after practice, Bowden let the news slip while talking about the likelihood of true freshman Dorell Scott seeing time at the same position this season.

"Chris is going to miss the Wake Forest game, so if we can get through that my inclination is not to play (Scott)," Bowden said. "We'd like to redshirt him if possible."

Asked if that meant he had officially decided McDuffie's team-related punishment from a July drug arrest, Bowden laughed.

"I think I did," he said. "Let me put it this way. It's one game for now. We play Wake Forest first, and Chris won't play against Wake Forest."

McDuffie first was suspended from the team after his arrest on marijuana possession charges, then later reinstated after he applied for pretrial intervention through the legal system. McDuffie's availability became more important for the Tigers after another true freshman, Rashaad Jackson, suffered a broken foot last week.

Jackson will redshirt this season.

Elsewhere, Bowden said true freshman wide receiver LaDonte Harris likely will play this season. Fellow freshman Aaron Kelly, who also has been impressive, appears destined to redshirt.

"LaDonte's got that bigger body type. He's a little thicker," Bowden said. "We'll look at him some on special teams and in a backup role right now."

Offensive tackles Akeem Robinson and Barry Richardson are the only other true freshmen likely to see action this season, Bowden said.

"At least that's the way it stands at the moment."
