CLEMSON - A solid performance by Charlie Whitehurst last week hasn't kept his head coach from exhibiting some gamesmanship this week.

Whitehurst, who missed the Duke game two weeks ago with a sore shoulder, returned last Saturday to lead Clemson to a 35-14 win over Florida State at Death Valley. His status for that game was kept under wraps by head coach Tommy Bowden, just as Will Proctor's start vs. the Blue Devils was the previous week.

So Thursday, asked again if Whitehurst would play, Bowden went into his routine.

"It will be pretty much like we've done the last four weeks. We'll evaluate him and make the decision before kickoff Saturday night," he said.

So, is there a chance Whitehurst won't play?

"Yes."

Is it a good chance?

"I'm not answering that."

The entire exchange was made with a smile on Bowden's face, enjoying the little give and take session with the media. And it is expected that Whitehurst will start in Columbia Saturday when the Tigers face No. 19 South Carolina.

Not so certain is the status of guard Nathan Bennett, who continues to be hobbled by a bruised calf. He is a game time decision.

So to is freshman wideout/kick returner Tyler Grisham. Sidelined again Thursday with a bad back, Grisham could miss the regular season finale Saturday. If he can't return kicks, Chansi Stuckey would join Aaron Kelly at that spot.
