Bowden Press Conference Highlights
Clemson Head Coach Tommy Bowden's comments on:
Defensive coordinator Reggie Herring and the play of the defense so far
"With what Reggie Herring and the rest of the defensive staff have
done, the results are pretty obvious. The sport of football should be
played with a great deal of emotion and intensity and Reggie Herring
coaches that way all the time. He has a great staff of defensive minds
around him and he gets great effort from his players, but it all starts at
the top with his leadership and enthusiasm."
Clemson's #7 ranking
"I do not know the ranking means we have things turned around or
not. Our ranking at the end of the season will determine that. For seven
straight years Clemson has not finished in the top-25, so to me that is the
next step. We are sitting at 4-0 but we have not taken that next step yet.
We are very pleased with the ranking and with the direction we are heading
but the job is not finished."
The Duke game:
"So far this season we have come to play every Saturday. Going to
Duke this weekend we will see very quickly if we can do it again. If you
look at the history of this game you will see that we have not been very
successful at Duke in past years. Over our last six trips we have a 3-3
record against them and they have averaged 16 points per game. Given that
track record we had better be ready to play on Saturday."
Quarterback Woody Dantzler
"It is no secret that he has been a vital part of our success on
offense this season. With our offensive scheme we strive for balance in the
running and passing game and that is why Woody is so valuable. If we were
to line up in the shotgun every time and throw the ball 40-45 times a game
then I think he could put up some of the same passing numbers as some of
the quarterbacks around the country that operate in that type of system.
He is so quick and agile that he very rarely takes a flush hit from
opposing defenders. He is also such an unselfish leader that every one on
the team is probably enjoying his success more than he is right now."
