Biggest game of the season not yet a sellout

CLEMSON – The Clemson Tigers are on the verge of playing their biggest game in two seasons, and Travis Furbee, the Clemson Assistant Athletic Director for Ticket Operations, said there are still over 5,000 tickets remaining for the Tigers’ 7:45 p.m. contest against Florida St on Saturday.

Furbee said that while ticket sales have been brisk this week, he is still a little bit surprised at the amount of tickets remaining, even though he knows the reasons.

“There are so many factors, really,” Furbee said. “The thing about it is that FSU sales were very stagnant until we beat Miami a few weeks ago. We have been very busy of late, and ticket sales have been great this week. We have sold 3000 in the last week, and that is pretty good. We have been pretty busy; we haven’t been this busy all football season.”

One reason for the extra tickets is that FSU fans, who normally travel well, have not bought their normal number for a Clemson-Florida St. game.

“Florida St. usually takes somewhere between 7 and 8000 tickets, and they have taken less than 4000 and returned the rest,” Furbee said. “I guess you can point that toward the economy. But things were slow for us until the Miami win, and then things really picked up for us.”

Furbee said he was unsure if they would get a large walk-up turnout or not on Saturday.

“One would hope we would be able to get that,” he said. “But I can’t say for positive that that will happen, because things have been so hit or miss for us. There have been a couple of games where the walk up ticket sales have been pretty good and a couple where they haven’t. I guess we’ll just have to see.”

Warren to be Inducted into Clemson Ring of Honor

Clemson, SC—Former Clemson NCAA Champion Charles Warren and reigning United States Open Champion Lucas Glover will both be honored during ceremonies on Saturday prior to the Clemson vs. Florida State game at Clemson Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:45 PM.

Warren will be inducted into the Clemson Ring of honor, the first Tiger golfer to receive the Athletic Department’s highest honor. The 1998 Clemson graduate won the 1997 NCAA Tournament as a junior and is still the only Clemson golfer to win that tournament. He is also the only two time ACC Tournament champion in school history.

Warren won the Dave Williams Award as the top senior golfer in the nation in 1998. He was a three-time All-American and a three-time All-ACC selection. He was named to the ACC 50-Year Anniversary team in 2002 and was inducted into the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.

Glover will be honored for his victory over Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and the rest of the world’s golfers this past June when he was victorious with a four under par score at Bethpage Black Golf Course in New York. He became the first former Clemson golfer to win a professional major.

Glover, a two-time All-American and three-time All-ACC performer during his Clemson career (1997-01) is ranked 16th in the latest World Rankings and is ninth on the PGA Tour money list this year..

In addition to dotting the I during the pregame, Glover will also run down the hill with the Clemson team during its famed entrance to the stadium.

Maye Named Academic All-District

Clemson, SC—Clemson linebacker Brandon Maye has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III football team. Maye will now be on the ballot for the Academic All-America team that will be voted on later this month.

Maye is the third leading tackler on a Clemson defense that ranks 12th in the nation in total defense and 15th in scoring defense. Maye has 53 tackles for the season, including two tackles for loss, a sack and nine quarterback pressures. He is second on the team in quarterback pressures.

The native of Mobile, AL is in his second season as a starter. Last year he had 87 tackles for the year, helping the Tigers to a top 15 national ranking in scoring defense an total defense.

Maye has a 3.36 career GPA in sociology. He is the first Clemson linebacker to make an Academic All-District team since Chad Carson in 2001.
