THE GAME: Maryland's Terrapins will be gunning for win No. 2 of the young season when they visit Big East foe West Virginia in a nationally-televised affair on ESPN2 ... the two teams have split the last six meetings with the Terps posting a 33-0 victory last year in College Park ... the Mountaineers lead the overall series 18-17-2, including a 9-8-1 edge in games played at home; Maryland's last win at West Virginia was a 24-13 win in 1994.

THE COACHES: Ron Vanderlinden is 11-23 in his first three seasons in College Park ... Don Nehlen is 143-88-4 in 21 seasons at West Virginia and 196-123-8 in 30 years overall.

THE GAME: 16th-ranked Clemson opens its 2000 conference slate when its hosts a Wake Forest team looking for its first win of the season in the 66th meeting between these two long-time rivals ... the Tigers have held the upper hand in this long-time series owning a 50-14-1 edge since the first meeting in 1933 ... Clemson has won 20 of the last 23 meetings ... Wake Forest has won in Death Valley just twice since 1961, with both of those wins coming under current Deacon coach Jim Caldwell in 1993 and 1998 ... overall the Tigers are 29-7 against the Deacons at home.

THE COACHES: Jim Caldwell is 24-56 in eight seasons at Wake Forest ... Tommy Bowden is 26-10 in four seasons overall, with an 8-6 mark in two years at Clemson.

FSU is 4-0-1 against UNC in Doak Campbell.

THE GAME: Georgia Tech's Yellow Jackets will host their third-straight home game in Bobby Dodd Stadium to open the season and will be looking to get back into the win column follow-ing Saturday's loss to second-ranked Florida State against a Navy team that stands 0-1 on the young season ... Navy has won five of the last seven meetings but still trails in the series 14-9 ... Tech rolled up 27 first downs and 507 yards in total offense in last year's 49-14 victory in Annapolis ... the Yellow Jackets are 9-4 against the Midshipmen in Bobby Dodd Stadium.

THE COACHES: Charlie Weatherbie is 29-29-0 in seven years at Navy and 44-48 in 10 seasons overall ... George O'Leary is 37-26 in six seasons with the Yellow Jackets.

GAME NOTES: Tech has proven to be tough against the run, allowing only 81 yards in the first two games ... the Jackets are ranked eighth nationally against the run (49.5); a year they finished 89th allowing 183.2 yards rushing per contest ... junior QB Bill Godsey completed 13 straight passes against Florida State Saturday and on the year has passed for 378 yards and four TDs ... in the fourth quarter of the first two games against CFU and FSU, Godsey has competed 20 of 25 passes for 220 yards and three TDs ... against FSU, sophomore QB Jermaine Crenshaw completed four of five passes for 30 yards and ran for an additional 36 yards on nine attempts ... THE GAME: Virginia and Duke open their respective conference schedules Saturday under the lights of Wallace Wade Stadium in the 52nd renewal of a series that started back in 1890 ... the Blue Devils posted a 24-17 overtime victory a year ago in Charlottesville and leads the series by a 27-24 margin, however the Cavaliers have won nine of the last 11 meetings ... Virginia has outscored the Blue Devils 333-126 over the last 10 games.

THE COACHES: George Welsh is 184-127-4 in 28 seasons, including a 129-81-3 in 19 years with the Cavaliers ... Duke's Carl Franks is 3-10 in his second season at Duke.

GAME NOTES: Virginia's Antwoine Womack is second in the ACC in rushing (92.5) and is tied with Clemson's Travis Zachery for the lead in rushing touchdowns with four ... over his last four games, senior QB Dan Elis has completed 69 of 104 passes (.663) for 1,221 yards (305.3 pg) and 12 TDs; has thrown for over 200 yards in four straight games and seven times in his career ... UVa's Mike Abrams is eighth nationally in punting (45.3) while Duke's Brian Morton (44.7) is 13th ... Duke QB Spencer Romine is ninth on the school's pass completion list (242) and is 10th in passing yardage (3,105); needs just 66 yards to move past Scotty Glacken (1963-65) who is ninth with 3,170 yards ... THE GAME: The undefeated Wolfpack close out their 2000 non-conference schedule when they return home to Carter-Finley Stadium to take on a SMU club that stands at 1-1 on the season with a victory over Kansas (31-17) and a loss to UTEP (37-20) ... the Mustangs won the series' only previous meeting, 35-14, in1968.

THE COACHES: Mike Cavan is 16-19 in four years at SMU and 83-68-2 in 15 seasons overall ...Chuck Amato is 2-0 in his first season as a head coach.

GAME NOTES: With its 41-38 win over Indiana Saturday, NC State improved its all-time record to 469-468-55, including a 104-102-6 in non-ACC games since joining the league in 1953 ... NC State QB Philip Rivers, the first true freshman in Wolfpack history to start at QB in the season opener, leads the nation in total offense, averaging 395.5 yards per game ... Rivers also leads the ACC in pass completions (60), yards passing (798) and touchdown passes (8) ... Ray Robinson leads the ACC and is 33rd nationally in rushing, averaging 102.0 yards per game and is 13th among NCS career rushing leaders with 1,464 yards; has five 100-yard games in his career ... NC State sophomore wide receiver Koren Robinson, the 1999 ACC Rookie of the Year, had seven catches for 112 yards against Indiana, marking the seventh time in his last eight games (and eighth time overall) that he has reached the century mark in receiving yardage ... Robinson is already 14th on State's all-time receiving yardage list with 1,080 yards ... the Wolfpack lead the ACC and are third nationally in total offense (506.5).



WEEK NO. 3 IN REVIEW

Freshman Philip Rivers tossed three of his five touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, including a 47-yarder to Koren Robinson with 54 seconds left to play as NC State rallied from a 15-point deficit to post a 41-38 win at Indiana ... senior quarterback Dan Ellis completed 19-of-28 passes for 299 yards and scored a TD as Virginia defeated in-state foe Richmond 34-6 ... Damie Anderson ran for 187 yards and two TDs and Zak Kustok threw for 197 yards and another two scores as Northwestern downed Duke 38-5 ... Travis Zachery scored three touchdowns and Woodrow Dantzler passed for two TDs and ran for another as Clemson routed visiting Missouri 62-9 ... LaMont Jordan ran for two touchdowns and Brian Kopka added a 41-yard field goal to lead Maryland to a season-opening 17-10 win over visiting Temple ... Bosley Allen scored on a 78-yard punt return and caught a 60-yard TD pass as North Carolina scored 26 unanswered second half points en route to a 35-14 win over Wake Forest ... Chris Weinke completed 25-of-38 passes for a career-high 443 yards and two touchdowns as second-ranked Florida State rallied to defeat Georgia Tech 26-21 for its 14th straight victory.



ATTENDANCE NOTES

Maryland drew 46,950 to its season opener with Temple Saturday night marking the Terps' largest home crowd in 26 games dating back to a September 16, 1995 game with West Virginia ... Wake Forest had its largest crowd in 62 games (dating back to a Sept. 9, 1989 game with Appalachian State) when 30,087 attended Saturday's game with North Carolina.



CAREER CHARTS

Maryland's LaMont Jordan ran for 62 yards and two TDs in the Terps' season-opening win over Temple and moved into 17th place on the ACC career rushing chart with 3,289 yards.



Florida State's Chris Weinke threw for a career-high 443 yards and two touchdowns in the Noles' 26-21 win at Georgia Tech and moved into 12th on the ACC career passing yardage list with 6,433 yards and 16th on the league's total offense list with 6,147 yards.

NC State freshman quarterback Philip Rivers has had an immediate impact on the college football scene ... the 6-5, 221-pound Athens, Ga., freshman currently leads the nation in total offense with a 395.5 yards per game average ... his 401 yards passing against Indiana is the second highest single-game total by an ACC freshman - Duke's Ben Bennett holds the ACC single game record for passing yardage with 469 yards vs. Wake Forest on Nov. 8, 1980 ...
