GREENSBORO, N.C.-The 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference football
schedule was released Tuesday by ACC Commissioner John Swofford. The
schedule is comprised of 63 games, including 36 conference matchups,
over a span of 14 weeks.

Virginia opens the ACC's 49th season traveling to Big Ten foe
Wisconsin to meet the Badgers in The Eddie Robinson Classic. That game
is one of 11 non-conference games against 10 teams which earned
post-season bowl invitations last year including East Carolina (twice),
Florida, Georgia, Miami, Northwestern, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia
Tech, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

In all, ACC schools will face seven non-conference teams which
finished in the Top 25 of the Bowl Championship Series standings,
including four opponents in the BCS Top 12. ACC teams will play 16 games
with non-conference foes which won seven or more games and the
cumulative winning percentage for the ACC non-conference opponents in
2000 was .553 (156-126). Prior to the start of the 2000 bowl campaign,
Atlantic Coast Conference teams posted a 19-9 (.679) mark against
non-conference foes this past season.
