Since the NFL’s inaugural draft was held on February 8, 1936, a total of 2,035 players from the 12 current ACC schools have been selected, including 192 first round selections ... the ACC had an all-time high eight first round selections in 1997 … Florida State has had at least one first round selection in eight of the past 12 years … Miami leads all ACC schools with 273 players selected in the NFL draft.

First Overall Selection

Virginia’s Bill Dudley was the first overall selection in the 1942 NFL draft … NC State’s Roman Gabriel was the first overall selection in the 1962 AFL draft and Boston College’s Jack Concannon was the No. 1 pick in the 1964 AFL draft … Miami (Russell Maryland, 1991 and Vinny Testaverde, 1987) and Virginia Tech (Bruce Smith, 1985 and Michael Vick, 2001) have each had two No. 1 overall selections … a list of top three picks from current ACC schools is as follows:

A Look Back at 2005

An ACC-record 36 players were selected in the 2005 NFL Draft, surpassing the previous record of 32 set in 1957 … Florida State led all schools with nine overall selections, including two first round picks … Miami’s Antrel Rolle was the first ACC player chosen when selected by Arizona with the eighth overall pick ... Virginia set a school record with seven selections ... selected as the 12th overall pick, Maryland’s Shawne Merriman became the first Terrapin player to be drafted in the first round since 1997, when Pittsburgh selected DB Chad Scott … of the 51 defensive backs taken in 2005, the ACC led all conferences with 10 selections ... all 10 of those selections were among the first 38 defensive backs taken in the first five rounds of the draft.
