CLEMSON BASKETBALL

Wake Edges Tigers, 67-65

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Michael Drum's putback of a Kyle Visser miss with 3.4 seconds left lifted Wake Forest to a 67-65 victory over visiting Clemson Wednesday night.

It was the Tigers' 16th-straight loss at Lawrence-Joel Coliseum. With the defeat, Clemson drops into a three-way tie for fifth place in the ACC (5-6), pending the outcome of Wednesday night's Boston College-Duke matchup.

Clemson (19-6) led for much of the second half, its largest margin being six points (57-51) with 9:45 remaining in the game.

But down the stretch the Tigers couldn't find the basket often enough to keep the Demon Deacons (12-13, 3-9 ACC) at bay. And they couldn't stop Visser, who scored seven of his 21 points in the final 5:22.

It was L.D. Williams who gave Wake Forest the lead for good, knocking down a jump shot at 2:13 remaining for a 64-62 Deacon lead. A short time later Visser would hit one-of-two from the line with :45 to go, keeping Wake's advantage at two points, 65-63.

However, James Mays tied it with a pair of free throws with :35 seconds remaining, setting up the Deacs for one final shot.

Freshman point guard Ish Smith ran the clock down to inside of 10 seconds before driving into the lane. He found Visser on the left baseline open for an easy layup, but Visser's shot rolled off the rim.

But Drum was left unaccounted for, and came flying down the lane for the follow shot which gave his team the lead with 3.4 seconds left.

Clemson quickly inbounded the ball to K.C. Rivers, who drove the length of the floor and got up an off-balance jumper at the buzzer that missed badly.

Clemson's pressure defense allowed it to build an eight-point lead, 33-25, in the latter stages of the first half. But the Deacs responded with an 11-0 run to regain the lead, five points coming from Anthony Gurley to spark the comeback.

But a tip-in by Julius Powell and a short jumper by Hammonds allowed Clemson to close the half with a quick 4-1 spurt to pull even, 37-37, at the break.

Vernon Hamilton led Clemson with 21 points, while Mays finished with 16. Hammonds and Trevor Booker added 12 and 10, respectively.

Williams followed Visser in the Wake Forest scoring column with 11, while Jamie Skeens added 10.
