UVA Pushes Tiger Losing Streak to Eight

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - For a while it looked like Clemson might flourish on a cold day in Virginia.

Then the Cavaliers turned up the heat. Defensive heat, that is.

Virginia held Clemson without a field goal for more than four minutes in the second half and parlayed that stretch into a 15-0 run, snapping a 50-50 tie and eventually cruising to an 85-71 victory Sunday at University Hall.

"I really liked the attitude we had most of the game," said Clemson head coach Larry Shyatt. "I believe we felt we could win. I felt with the 13 or 12 minute mark I liked the way the game was going. At that point I credit Virginia’s pressure defense for changing it."

The win snapped Virginia's (15-6, 5-5) four-game losing streak, and extended the Tigers' (11-13, 2-9) skid to eight straight.

Clemson managed to get off just four shots during the decisive run, and never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

Roger Mason Junior scored 23 points to lead Virginia, while Travis Watson added 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Jamar McKnight led Clemson with 18, with Chris Hobbs adding 15.

Clemson battled back from an early 11-point deficit in the first half and trailed just 44-39 at the break. The Tigers withstood an early 3-point barrage by Virginia, who had five different players connect from behind the arc in the game's first eight minutes.

Virginia was just 2-of-25 on 3-pointers in Clemson's upset of the Cavs earlier this season at Littlejohn Coliseum.
