Tigers lose second straight ACC game in loss to Tar Heels |

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Breaking the streak will have to wait a little while longer.
The sixth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels used a 24-4 run spanning the last few minutes of the first half and the first four of the second half in rolling past ninth-ranked Clemson 94-70 at the Dean Dome Wednesday night, making the Tigers 0-54 in Chapel Hill.
The streak is the longest of its kind in NCAA basketball.
The Tar Heels (17-2, 3-2 ACC) lost two early ACC contests, but against the Tigers (16-2, 2-2 ACC), they played like the team forecast as the preseason No. 1, and played perhaps their best defensive game of the season against Clemson, in addition to getting 25 points from Wayne Ellington and 20 points from Tyler Hansbrough.
Ellington was coming off a 23-point performance last weekend against Miami, and averaged 29 points in three meetings against Clemson last season, including a career-high 36 and the last-second 3-pointer on the road for the win in the first meeting. This time, he finished 9-for-15 from the field to go with a career-high seven assists and six rebounds.
The Tigers played well early, getting early baskets from freshman Tanner Smith and sophomore Terrence Oglesby. Oglesby was torrid from behind the arc, hitting three of his first four three-pointers on the way to 17 first-half points. The Tigers led by as many as five points on two separate occasions before North Carolina started chipping away.
Oglesby hit his third three-pointer of the half to give Clemson a 38-36 lead with 3:31 remaining in the half, but Ellington hit a three off a feed from Ty Lawson in the final seconds to cap a 9-2 spurt that gave the Tar Heels a 45-40 halftime lead.
“We turned the basketball over at the top way too much there late in the first half,” Clemson head coach Oliver Purnell said. “We did not shoot it very well all night long, and in the second half it seemed to snowball. North Carolina picked it up from there in terms of making shots, but those first half turnovera really hurt.”
The Tar Heels dominated from there, starting the second half with a 15-2 run that ended with consecutive scores from Hansbrough to make it 60-42 with 14:31 left.
The margin was as much as 27 points in the second half, and Clemson could come no closer than 13 after that as both coaches emptied their benches in the rout.
Clemson was led by Oglesby’s 22 points, but after his early pace, he went just 1-for-9 from three-point range. Junior post player Trevor Booker, who came into the game leading the Tigers in points per game and leading the ACC in blocked shots, had just seven points and four rebounds to go along with no blocked shots, his second straight sub par effort against a Top 10 team.
“In the second half, we came out in the zone and stopped them on their first two possessions, but they got second and third shots and got the lead to double figures, and we were looking up, or down from there," Purnell said.
Raymond Sykes was the second-leading scorer for Clemson, getting all nine of his points in the second half, while Jerai Grant provided Clemson’s lone defensive threat with five blocked shots. The margin of defeat was the largest for Clemson since losing by 24 in the 2004-05 season. The largest margin of defeat last season was 13.
The offensive woes for the Tigers continued, with Wednesday’s game marking the second straight that Clemson has shot less than 36% from the field (24-for-68, 35.3%), and also marks the fourth straight game that has seen Clemson be outscored by their opponents by 27 points in the opening minutes of second halves.
“That is why we play good defense, so you can stay in the game, and we didn’t do that,” Purnell said. “Offensively, we are struggling a little bit now and it will be up to our defense to pick it up and get us going again.”
The Tigers will try to get back above .500 in the conference when they host Georgia Tech (0-5 in the ACC) Sunday evening at 7:45 at Littlejohn Coliseum.
“We are going to go back and get rested up and get ready for Georgia Tech on Sunday,” Purnell said. “That is two losses in the league and we need a win in the worst way. We have a home game on Sunday to try and get it.”
