Tigers Struggle in 88-78 Victory Over Elon

by -

CLEMSON -- After taking a week off for exams the Clemson basketball team returned to action for its first ever meeting with Elon. As is typical in games after exam week the game play was sloppy and marred by many turnovers including 24 for the Tigers who labored to put away the Phoenix.

Fortunately for Clemson, Jamar McKnight picked a good time to have his best game as a Tiger as he scored a career high 23 points with 6 rebounds leading the Tigers to the 88-78 victory.

Elon (4-6) opened the game with a 21-8 lead with some hot shooting and helped by five early Clemson (7-3) turnovers.

Over the next 10 minutes the Tigers were able to regain the lead at 29-27 with a 21-6 run. However, the Tigers needed a Tony Stockman three pointer at the buzzer to take a one point lead at 45-44 into the half.

The Tigers once again trailed 63-56 halfway through the second half, but McKnight’s bucket at the 9:13 mark cut the lead to 63-62.

It would be the last lead for the Phoenix as the Tigers would jump in front on the next possession and take the control of the game and go on to the hard fought win.

Ed Scott had 21 points with 11 assists, and Tony Stockman added 19 points. Stockman was 4-10 on 3 point field goals after going 0 for 8 against South Carolina last week.

Ross Sims led Elon in scoring with 21 points.

Clemson remains perfect in 35 meetings against teams from the Big South conference all-time, including a 3-0 record last year.

The Tigers will next face Winthrop Tuesday night at 7:00 PM EST.
