CLEMSON - With its eyes set on the future, Clemson got a good look Monday night at part of Oliver Purnell's past.

Purnell's Tigers steadily pulled away from visiting Radford in the second half at Littlejohn Coliseum, turning a three-point game into a 74-58 victory. Purnell's first head coaching job was at Radford.

Clemson (6-4) led just 46-43 with 19:00 left in the game after Radford's Whit Holcomb-Faye's 3-pointer. But it would be more than eight minutes before the Highlanders (4-5) scored again, missing three shots and a pair of free throws before Chris Oliver ended the skid with two from the charity stripe.

By that time Clemson's offense had built a 53-45 lead, and Radford never got closer than five points the rest of the way.

Chey Christie topped the Tigers with 20 points, while Sharrod Ford added 12. Chris Hobbs and Shawan Robinson added 11 each.

Holcomb-Faye topped the Highlanders with 18 points.

Clemson opened the first half uncharacteristically fast, lead by nine on three occasions - 11-2, 14-5 and 17-8. But Radford fought back to make a game of it, pulling within 19-17 on an Aaron Gill layup with 7:50 left in the half.

But a quick 10-3 run - keyed by five points from Christie - pushed the lead back to 11, 31-20, with just over four minutes left.

Clemson held on for a nine-point lead, 40-31, at the break.

The Tigers showed dramatic improvement at the free throw line, connecting on 19-of-24 (79 percent).
