Tigers Fall to No. 7 Virginia

Charlottesville, VA -- Virginia extended their four game winning streak, beating Clemson (11-17, 2-13 Atlantic Coast Conference), 84-65 on senior night in Charlottesville.

Late in the first half, an Ed Scott bucket got the Tigers within three. But a series where a hard foul from Clemson’s Tomas Nagys on an attempted dunk was called flagrant, and then Clemson head coach Larry Shyatt got a technical for disagreeing up the Virginia lead to nearly double digits. The Cavaliers had their working margin, and the Tigers were never able to get close to Virginia (20-6, 9-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) again.

Virginia’s full court press forced 17 turnovers alone in the first half which turned into 19 points. The Tigers had 25 turnovers for the game.

“The are not only the quickest team in our league but they well may be the one of the quickest team in the country,“ said Shyatt after the game.

The Cavaliers led 42-33 at the half.

Clemson’s leading scorer Will Solomon, who flew separately from the team, was able to play only in small intervals, scoring 7 points. He has suffered from the flu this week, and had been cleared to play at the last minute.

“I wasn’t even going to put him in the second half, but he said he could go,” said Shyatt. “A lot of guys would not go in when their A game is not there.”

Nagys had his best game as a Tiger scoring a career high 19 points and grabbing 9 boards. Freshman Dwon Clifton scored 10.

Virginia was led in scoring by Chris Williams with 17 points, and Stephane Dondon added 11.

Clemson will next take on Florida State in the regular season finale on Saturday at noon which will be the final home game for Tiger senior Adam Allenspach.
