Tigers Fall to Gamecocks

by -

CLEMSON -- South Carolina’s Carlos Powell scored 23 points and recorded six steals as the Gamecocks beat Clemson 76-61 on Saturday night for their fourth straight win in the series.

South Carolina (8-0) who is off to their best start in over 20 years forced 27 Clemson turnovers.

Powell’s 15-footer with 11 minutes remaining started a 20-6 run that gave the Gamecocks a 63-50 advantage with 4:30 to play. South Carolina converted nine of ten free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Chris Hobbs led the Tiger with 13 points. Olu Babalola recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds but had 7

turnovers.

“The second half was disappointing not only on the offense end against the zone but defensively where we gave up 50% shooting,” said Clemson head coach Oliver Purnell. ” They hit some big threes right in our faces down that stretch that we didn’t contest.”

Clemson led 33-30 at halftime despite committing 15 turnovers which, in turn, led to 15 USC points.

“There is really is no excuse for turning the ball over against their zone,” said Purnell. “It really wasn’t a pressure zone.”

The turnovers slowed a quick start by the Tigers and allowed the Gamecocks to battle back from an early six-point deficit. South Carolina took its first lead of the game, 20-18, on a 3-pointer from the top of the key by Kerbrell Brown.

USC's largest lead of the half was four points, but Clemson was able to battle back to grab the three point advantage at halftime.

The Gamecocks, as anticipated, tried to rely mostly on a perimeter attack, but connected on just 1-of-12 from behind the arc in the half. Clemson was 3-of-9.

But it was the lack of production inside by the Tiger big men - working in concert with the turnovers, which kept South Carolina close. Though Hobbs, Ford, Babalola and Akin Akinbala combined for 16 points in the half, the foursome made only 5-of-15 field goal attempts.

Clemson will next travel to Athens to face the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday.
