Tigers End Losing Streak with 2OT Thriller

by -

CLEMSON, SC – It wasn’t pretty at times, but Clemson finally broke an eight-game losing streak with a 118-115 double-overtime victory over No. 17 Wake Forest on Wednesday night. Taron Downey made a layup to cut the Tiger lead to three with 14 seconds left in the second overtime. The Tigers then had trouble getting the ball in bounded and called a timeout they didn't have. Craig Dawson cut the margin to a single point with the two free throws on the technical foul. Clemson’s Chris Hobbs who had only made 6 of 17 previous free throws hit two clutch free throws to get the lead back to 3. Wake was unable to get a shot off for the possible game-tying three as time expired. Ray Henderson and Hobbs dominated the second overtime by scoring 13 of the Tigers' 17 points. Edward Scott led the Tigers with 30 points and 16 assists. Both were career highs. Tony Stockman also scored a career-high 30 points. Wake Forest rallied from a 15-point deficit (81-66) with 3:40 to play and scored 28 points in that time. The Deacs made six three-point goals in the last 3:40, including five threes inside the last 1:02. Downey’s running three with 0.6 seconds left sent the game into the first overtime tied at 94. “I don’t think anyone who saw this game here or on TV will ever forget it, “ said Clemson head coach Larry Shyatt. “This is the medicine our players have needed.”

GAME NOTES *The two teams combined for 233 points, the second most in history for two ACC teams in one game. The only one higher took place on Dec. 20, 1978 when Maryland (124) defeated NC State (110). The record for points scored by two teams in any game involving an ACC team is 244 when NC State defeated Georgia Southern 144-100 on December 4, 1972 and when NC State defeated Buffalo State on Dec. 5, 1974. *Craig Dawson tied the ACC record for three-point goals in a game with 11 (on 17 attempts), yet his team lost the game. Dennis Scott had 11 made three-point goals for Georgia Tech against Houston in a game played in the Rainbow Classic on 12-28-88. *Wake Forest set an ACC record for made three-point goals in a game with 19. The previous record was 18 by three teams, including Wake Forest against North Carolina on 1-31-98. Wake Forest's 42 three-point attempts were one off the record for attempts in a game. Wake Forest had 43 attempts against North Carolina in 1998. *Clemson guard Edward Scott had 30 points and 16 assists. The assist total was the most by a Clemson player in an ACC game in history. In fact he broke his own record for an ACC game. Scott had 13 in a loss to NC State on Jan. 15 of this year. Overall, it was the third most assists in a game in Clemson history, most since Grayson Marshall had 20 assists against Maryland-Eastern Shore on 11-25-85 *Tony Stockman and Edward Scott both scored 30 points for Clemson. It was just the second time in history that two Clemson players scored at least 30 points in the same game. Rayfield Ragland (32) and Devin Gray (30) each had at least 30 in Clemson's 120-103 win over Charleston Southern on 12-1-93. *That game with Charleston Southern was the previous Clemson record for points scored by two teams in the same game. This game eclipsed that record by 10 points. Of course, the Charleston Southern game was not an overtime game. *Chris Hobbs added 24 points to the 30 points scored by Stockman and Scott. The 84 combined points by the three Clemson players tied the school record for points scored by three players in the same game. On Feb. 21, 1955, Bill Yarborough (34), Bruce Holzschuh (27) and Tommy Smith (23) combined for 84 in a 105-94 win over Georgia. *Tonight's game marked the first time since March 12, 1993 that three Clemson players scored at least 20 points in the same game. Sharone Wright (24), Devin Gray (23) and Chris Whitney (20) all had at least 20 against Florida State in the 1993 ACC Tournament first round game in the Charlotte Coliseum. *Clemson won its first overtime game under Larry Shyatt. It was Clemson's first overtime win since defeated Maryland at Clemson 78-65 on Dec. 4, 1997 at Littlejohn Coliseum. It was the first double overtime victory for the Tigers since a 97-94 victory over a 13th ranked Georgia Tech team at Littlejohn Coliseum. *Tonight's game was the 500th career broadcast for Clemson play by play announcer Jim Phillips in Littlejohn Coliseum. It was a two hour and 50 minute game that he will remember for years to come. *Tony Stockman had a career high scoring with 30 points and tied his career high in assists with six. He played 43 minutes without a turnover, a school record for minutes without a turnover in a Clemson game. *The 118 points scored by Clemson ranked as the seventh highest scoring game in Clemson history, its highest since scoring 120 at Charleston Southern on 12-1-93. The 115 points scored by Wake Forest were the sixth most ever scored by a Clemson opponent and the most since Duke scored 115 last year at Durham (1-7-2000). *Clemson had 62 rebounds in the game, tied for the eight highest total in Clemson history. It tied for the most by a Clemson team since 1970. *Wake Forest rallied from a 15-point deficit (81-66) with 3:40 to play. Wake Forest scored 28 points in the last 3:40 of the game. The Deacs made six three-point goals in the last 3:40, including five threes inside the last 1:02. One of the plays was a four-point play by Dawson. It was the first four-point play against Clemson since Wake Forest's Robert O'Kelley had one at Clemson in the 1998-99 season, a game Wake Forest won by three points. *Edward Scott scored 14 consecutive Clemson points from the 7:41 mark of the game until the 3:48 mark, a 3:53 spurt. It was just one point off the Clemson record for consecutive points scored by one player. Will Solomon had 15 in a row in a win over Florida State at Clemson in 1999-00. *Scott went over the 200 mark for assists with his 16 in the win over Wake Forest. He now has 205 for the season and is just the second Clemson player in history to have at least 200 in a season. Grayson Marshall did it twice. *Chris Hobbs had had just one double-double all year prior to the Wake Forest game on Wednesday. He had 24 points and 17 rebounds against the Deacons. *Ray Henderson never scored a point and had just one rebound through the first 40 minutes of the game, then had eight points and six rebounds in the two overtimes. *The victory broke Clemson's eight game losing streak, a streak that had begun with a 41-point loss to Wake Forest on January 12. Last year Clemson ended an eight-game losing streak with an upset of #1 ranked North Carolina. That eight-game streak had started with a 27-point loss to North Carolina. BOX SCORE
