CLEMSON - Larry Shyatt's recruiting job for the 2001-2002 season isn't
finished after all.
The Clemson head basketball coach announced Monday that three players -
juniors Dustin Braddick and Chucky Gilmore and sophomore Pasha Bains - will
transfer to other schools at the end of the current semester.
The moves mean the Tigers, who would have been one scholarship player over
the limit of 13 had the roster remained current, will be able to sign one
additional recruit for the coming season. That number could jump to two if
leading scorer Will Solomon decides to forego his senior season and apply
for the NBA Draft.
One potential addition could be 6-foot-8 power forward Jermere Hendrix of
Eastside High School in Covington, Ga. One recruiting service reported
Monday that Hendrix, who signed with Notre Dame last fall but was released
from his letter of intent, is ready to make a verbal committment to the
Tigers at any time.
Hendrix, who averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds per game as a high school
senior, reportedly was denied admission to Notre Dame because of a subpar
grade in a Human Anatomy class.
Other schools after Hendrix include Cincinnati, N.C. State, Winthrop and the
College of Charleston.
Neither Shyatt or Sports Information Director Tim Bourret would comment on
specific reasons the trio decided to transfer, but the third-year head coach
said players leaving a program isn't all that uncommon.
"There are different reasons for attrition, we've talked about that before,"
he said from his cell phone Monday afternoon, on his way to a speaking
engagement. "Some leave for playing time, some leave for academics, some
leave for other reasons. The bottom line now is we have an extra scholarship
and we intend to fill it.
"We wish (the three of them) well as they pursue their education and their
basketball career."

Bains, who originally signed with Shyatt at Wyoming and followed the coach
to Clemson, averaged 4.9 points per game and led the Tigers in 3-point
shooting percentage at 40.6 percent (28-of-69). The 6-foot-3 guard from
British Columbia began the season in the starting lineup, but the emergence
of freshmen Tony Stockman and Dwon Clifton limited his playing time as the
season wore on.
Braddick averaged 4.4 points and 4.2 rebounds this past season, playing in
30 of Clemson's 31 games and starting four. A native of Charleston, Braddick
lettered on Clemson's NIT finalist team of 1998-99.
Gilmore (Fayetteville, N.C.) missed the 2000-2001 season after tearing an
anterior cruciate ligament in preseason individual workouts. He started 23
of his 27 games the previous season, averaging 3.7 points and 6.1 rebounds.
Shyatt has until April 21 to sign an additional recruit. The current class,
ranked No. 11 by at least one national recruiting service, includes 6-9
Sharrod Ford, 6-6 Olu Babalola, 6-4 Chey Christie and 6-10 Steve Allen.
