CLEMSON, SC - The duel between Clemson's Will Solomon and Maryland's Juan Dixon
never developed. Instead it was Maryland's freshman point guard and a little-noticed center
that stole the show Tuesday night at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Point guard Steven Blake held Solomon, the Atlantic Coast Conference's
leading scorer, to 12 points while Lonny Baxter scored 25 to lead No. 19
Maryland (20-7 overall, 9-4 ACC) to a 76-63 win over Clemson (9-17, 3-10) in
front of 5,000.

Blake's pressure kept Solomon from getting into the game in the first half
while Baxter, who came into the game averaging just over 15 points a game,
scored 16 in the first half. The Terps never noticed that Dixon, who came in
averaging 21 points a game, scored just 11.

Clemson cut Maryland's 12-point halftime lead to eight on a 3-pointer from
the top of the key by Will Solomon with 15:55 left in the game and appeared
to have the momentum. However, the game was slowed by the ejection of a fan
and Maryland went on a 6-0 run to take a 55-39 lead with 12:04 left on a
put-back by Lonnie Baxter. Clemson never threatened again.

Maryland quickly built the lead to 20 on a 3-pointer by Tajh Holden and a
lay-up by Drew Nicholas that gave the Terps a 67-47 lead with 7:02 left in
the game.

Maryland, chasing first place Duke in the conference standings, quickly took
control of the game.

The Terps led by 11 before their energetic coach Gary Williams could break a
sweat.

Maryland hit six of its first eight shots and led 15-4 after a 3-pointer by
Steven Blake with 15:58 left in the half.

Blake also guarded Will Solomon and held him to five points in the first
half. The Tigers tried to make a run midway through the half after Maryland
ran to a 22-8 lead. The Tigers went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 22-16
after a 17-footer by Solomon with 9:56 left in the half, but Clemson didn't
score again for four minutes and Maryland took a 32-16 lead after another
3-pointer by Blake with 6:09 left in the half.

Maryland hit 46 percent from the field in the first half. Lonny Baxter, who
came into the game averaging 15.4 points a game, led the Terps with 16
points in the first half.
