RALEIGH, N.C. - Clemson's up and down play took another downward turn
Saturday in Raleigh.

Anthony Grundy scored 23 points and N.C. State's league-best scoring defense
throttled Clemson's offense in an 83-54 Wolfpack victory. The win improves
State to 19-7 overall (8-5 Atlantic Coast Conference), while the Tigers fall
to 12-14 (3-10).

After combining for 60 points in Wednesday's 118-115 double overtime win over
Wake Forest, Clemson guards Ed Scott and Tony Stockman were held to just 15
points Saturday. The Tigers were 1-of-12 on 3-point attempts, and shot just
38 percent from the floor for the game.

State's defense was especially physical where Scott was concerned, often
dropping a post player off on the junior point guard in a double-team to stop
his penetration. Scott picked himself up from the floor on more than one
occasion, and was forced out of the game for a time after an N.C. State
player delivered an elbow to his mouth, causing a bloody lip.

"He got knocked pretty good," said Clemson head coach Larry Shyatt. "
I was disappointed they just happen to miss that call."

Meanwhile, the Wolfpack put the game away with a barrage of 3-point baskets
in the second half, cruising to their largest season victory total since Jim
Valvano's 1989 team went 20-7.

"There are no other teams in this league except (Georgia) Tech that have their post
players not only playing on the three-point line but shooting the ball," said Shyatt.

Chris Hobbs led Clemson with 13 points.

State's Ilian Evtimov had 18 points in support of Grundy.
