Hammonds Named Co-ACC Rookie of the Week |
CLEMSON, SC - Clemson's Cliff Hammonds was named ACC Men's Basketball Co-Rookie of the Week after helping lead the Tigers to two victories last week. The freshman guard from Cairo, GA, was instrumental in the Tigers' wins over Ohio State in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge and in Clemson's overtime victory against in-state rival South Carolina.
Hammonds is the first Tiger to earn Rookie of the Week honors since Chey Christie received the accolade during the 2001-02 season. For the week, Hammonds was 11-16 (68.8) from the field, including 8-11 (72.7) from beyond the arc. He averaged 15.5 points and 3.5 assists per game, with 12 rebounds and three steals. Against Ohio State, he scored 14 points with six rebounds, four assists, two steals and one turnover in 31 minutes of play. Hammonds scored a career-high 17 points with six rebounds in 39 minutes of play against the Gamecocks. The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Dec. 11 as they play host to Charleston Southern in a 7:00 PM game. PLAYER OF THE WEEK Duke’s J.J. Redick led the 10th-ranked Blue Devils to a 2-0 week including a 81-74 win over ninth-ranked Michigan State in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. In the two games against the Spartans and Crusaders, Reddick averaged 27.5 point per game while shooting 54.8 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from three-point distance. Against Michigan State, the Roanoke, Va., junior tied for a team-high with 29 points, including 21 in the first half. ACC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Virginia’s Sean Singletary and Clemson’s Cliff Hammonds were tabbed Co-ACC Rookies of the Week. Singletary scored 33 points and had 10 rebounds in the Cavaliers’ victories over Northwestern and Auburn last week. The Philadelphia, Pa., native shot 50 percent (12-for-24) from the field, including 36.4 percent (4-11) from three-point range. He also had four assists, three steals, two blocked shots and nine turnovers in 61 minutes of playing time. Hammonds averaged 15.5 points and 3.5 assists in the Tigers’ wins over Ohio State and in-state rival South Carolina. The Cairo, Ga., product was 11-for-16 (68.8) from the field, including 8-for-11 (72.7) from beyond the arc in the two victories. In addition, Hammonds pulled down 12 rebounds and came up with three steals.
