Game Notes
• Clemson will play its second consecutive ACC game
against a top six team when the Tigers face Wake
Forest. This is the first time since....last year that
the Tigers have had to open their ACC schedule
with a pair of top 10 teams. Last year Clemson
opened its ACC slat against #2 Duke and #5 Wake
Forest. But, that is the only other time that has happened
in the last 26 years.
• Clemson has lost five of six to Wake Forest since
Skip Prosser became the head coach of the Deacs.
The only win was a thriller, a 118-115 double overtime
triumph in Littlejohn Coliseum on Feb. 13, 2002.
• Sharrod Ford will play in his 100th career game at
Clemson when the Tigers face Wake Forest on Saturday.
He has started 68 of his first 99 and has 873
poins and 603 rebounds.
• Sharrod Ford has made 54 of his last 91 shots from
the field (.591) and averaged 16.8 points per game
over his last eight games. Ford is coming off a 20-
point performance at Duke. Ford has 15 career
double-doubles, third among active ACC players
Shelden Williams (24) and Sean May (19).
• Shawan Robinson has 99 three-point goals and
obviously needs just one to become the 11th player
in Clemson history to score 100 three-point goals in
a career.
• Olu Babalola scored his career high of 22 points
# Rainbowl Classic at Honolulu, $ at Bilo Center, Greenville, SC
% ACC Tournament at MCI Center in Washington, DC !Overtime
against the Demon Deacons at Littlejohn Coliseum
last year. He scored the 22 points in just 27 minutes.
It is the only 20 point game of his Clemson
career.
• Clemson ranks fifth in the nation in steals and 24th
in blocked shots this week. Clemson is one of just
six schools nationally to rank in the top 25 in both
categories.
• Vernon Hamilton has 35 steals and just 26 fouls so
far this year. Only one Clemson player in the last
17 years has finished a season with more steals
than fouls. Freshman Cliff Hammonds is also on
pace to do as the rookie has 25 steals and 22 fouls
so far this year.
• Clemson will face a Wake Forest team that is ranked
fourth in AP, third by USA Today, fifth by Sagarin
and second by the collegerpi.com. Clemson has
not beaten a team rnaked in the top three in either
of the major polls since Feb. 18, 2001 when Clemson
upset number-one ranked North Carolina.
• Clemson has not defeated a top five Wake Forest
team since the 1980-81 season when Larry Nance
led the Tigers to an 81-71 victory in Clemson.
• Oliver Purnell and Skip Prosser faced each other
13 time when Purnell was at Dayton and Prosser
was at Xavier. Prosser had a 7-6 lead in those
games, but the home team won 12 of the 13.
Notes on the Clemson vs. Wake Forest
Series
•Wake Forest holds a 92-50 lead in
the series over Clemson. The school have split
66 games at Clemson, but the Tigers have a
19-17 advantage in games at Littlejohn
Coliseum.
•Wake Forest has dominated the
series in recent years, winning 11 of the last 12
and 16 of the last 18. Clemson last won in
2001-02, 118-115 in double overtime in one of
the most exciting games in the history of
Littlejohn Coliseum. That was the third time in
the history of the series that both teams scored
at least 100 points in the series in a game
played at Clemson. That is three of the four
games in Clemson’s ACC history that both
teams have scored at least 100 points.
•One of the top games of the series
took place in 1996-97 when a second-ranked
Clemson faced a third-ranked Wake Forest
team led by Tim Duncan. Clemson students
(including current PGA Golfers Jonathan Byrd
and Charles Warren) camped out in 141 tents
on the lawn at Littlejohn Coliseum waiting for
ticket distribution for that game. There were
seven satellite trucks used to fee live shots
before and after the game.
Wake Forest came away with a 65-62 victory, a
game that was decided on the last possession
of the game, as Clemson forward Andrius
Jurkunas was called for charging. Four of the
last eight games in Littlejohn between the two
teams have been decided by four points or less.
•Clemson has had trouble scoring
over the recent years against Wake Forest. The
only time Clemson has scored over 68 points
against the Deacs in the last 12 meetings was
the 118-115 double overtime game at Clemson
in 2001-02. Clemson scored 63 and 67 points
in the two games last year. Clemson has
scored in the 70s against Wake Forest just
once in the last 12 games and that was the
double overtime game when it scored 118
points in 2001-02.
•Wake Forest defeated Clemson by
41 points (96-55) in the first meeting between
the two teams in 2001-02, then Clemson came
back to gain victory in double overtime in the
second game.
•Clemson is 12-49 lifetime at Wake
Forest, including 1-14 in games played in the
Lawrence Joel Coliseum. Clemson has lost 14
straight in that facility that was opened for the
1989-90 season. Clemson won that game
behind Dale Davis and Elden Campbell, 89-75,
but the Tigers have not won since. Campbell
scored 24 points, while Davis had 16 points and
14 rebounds. Marion Cash added a career high
21 points for Cliff Ellis’s Tigers.
Clemson will not play at Wake Forest
this year, the first time Clemson has not played
the Demon Deacons in the state of North
Carolina since the 1945-46 season.
•Clemson’s 14-game losing streak at
Wake Forest is second only to its losing streak
at North Carolina. Clemson has lost 50 in a row
in Chapel Hill.
•Clemson downed Wake Forest two
of three games in 1997-98, by 25 at Clemson
and by 19 in the NCAA Tournament in
Greensboro. Clemson used dominant second
halves in both victories. Wake Forest led at the
half in both games, including an eight-point
margin in the ACC Tournament game. But,
Clemson outscored the Deacs 43-17 in the
game at Clemson and 43-16 in the game at
Greensboro. Wake Forest won the game at
Winston-Salem that year, 70-66.
Clemson’s Top 5 Wins
Wake Forest enters this game ranked in the top five in the
nation in both polls. Clemson has had a history of upsetting top five
teams over the years, there have been 16 overall. Clemson has beaten
a top five team twice in the last four years. Clemson downed a #1 North
Carolina team in 2000-01 and a fifth-ranked Virginia team in 2001-02.
Both wins were by double digits.
Oliver Purnell upset two top 15 teams last year, a 12th ranked
North Carolina team and a 13th ranked NC State team, both at Littlejohn
Coliseum.
Clemson’s first win over a top five team in Littlejohn Coliseum
took place in 1974-75 when a Clemson team led by Skip Wise defeated
Maryland, 83-82. Maryland was ranked third in AP and fourth by UPI
entering that contest. Clemson also beat a fifth-ranked Maryland team in
1979-80 by a 90-81 score. Three Tigers, Larry Nance, Horace Wyatt and
Billy Williams, all had over 20 points in that Tiger victory.
Clemson has three top five win on the opponents home court in
history, including two at Wake Forest when Tree Rollins played for the
Tigers.Clemson has five top five wins away from home altogether,
including a win over third-ranked and defending national champion
Kentucky to open the 1996-97 season.
Clemson has two wins over the number-one ranked team in the
nation. The Tigers upset a #1 ranked Duke team in 1979-80 by an 87-82
score in overtime, and downed a #1 ranked North Carolina team 75-65 in
2000-01. Clemson was a heavy underdog in that game three years ago,
having lost its most recent game by 34 points at NC State. The Tar
Heels entered the game on an 18-game winning streak.
