Elder Powers Jackets to Victory Over Tigers

by -

ATLANTA - Clemson's shooting woes have been a season-long malady. B.J. Elder's struggles have been more recent.

One continued Tuesday night. One did not.

Elder scored a career-high 36 points, leading No. 14 Georgia Tech to a 76-69 victory over visiting Clemson at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The Yellow Jackets are now 10-0 at home this season.

Elder, whose offensive production had dipped somewhat once ACC play began, broke out of his slump in a big way Tuesday. Elder hit from all angles, both close to the basket and far away from it. He finished the night 12-20 from the field, including 6-10 from behind the 3-point line.

Sparked by Elder, Georgia Tech (16-3, 4-2) used spurts of 8-0 and 10-0 in the second half to take control of the game.

Clemson (8-10, 1-6) hung tough behind another solid offensive performance from Shawan Robinson (21 points – career high), but ultimately the Yellow Jackets had too much firepower down the stretch.

“Tonight he (Robinson) made a bunch of shots for us and help put us in position to win,“ said head coach Oliver Purnell.

Center Sharrod Ford added 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Tigers.

Marvin Lewis was the only other scorer besides Elder in double figures for the Jackets with 11 points.

Clemson trailed 40-34 at halftime thanks in part to Elder's awakening.

The Yellow Jacket junior broke out of a shooting slump with 20 points in the half, including 3-of-4 from 3-point territory. At one point Tech ran off 11 straight points, turning a 21-17 deficit into a 28-21 advantage, with Elder scoring six points during the stretch.

Led by Elder's 8-of-12 overall performance, Tech finished the half shooting a blistering 58 percent (15-of-26).

But instead of folding under Tech's constant pressure, the Tigers were able to hang close thanks to a balanced scoring effort. Though no Clemson player hit double figures, six different Tigers scored. Ford led the way with nine, while Lamar Rice and Shawan Robinson added six each.

Clemson also had nine offensive rebounds in the half, helping offset a 39 percent (12-of-31) shooting effort.

Both teams committed nine turnovers in the half.
