Clemson Defeats North Carolina 75-57 in ACC Tournament |
GREENSBORO, NC -- Marci Glenney scored 18 points and Krystal Scott added 17 in
leading Clemson to a 75-57 win over North Carolina in the quarterfinal round of the 24th Annual ACC Women's Basketball Tournament at Greensboro, NC Saturday afternoon. With the win, Clemson improves to 20-8 overall, while North Carolina falls to 15-14 this season. Clemson has won five games in a row. The Lady Tigers are ranked 19th by the USA Today poll and 25th by the Associated Press. Clemson has advanced to the ACC Tournament semifinals 18 times in the school's history, 12 times under Head Coach Jim Davis. Clemson will meet the winner of the N.C. State-Maryland game in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. The game will be televised live by Fox Sports South, Home Team Sports and by Sunshine Sports. Florida State will face Duke in the other semifinal game at 1:00 p.m. With today's win, Clemson won its 20th game. In Jim Davis' 14 years at Clemson, the Lady Tigers have won 20 or more games in 11 seasons. The other three seasons, the Lady Tigers won 19 games each. In the first half, the score was tied 10-10 with 10:27 left to play. From this point, Clemson went on a 13-4 run and built a 23-14 lead with 5:40 remaining. Julie Aderhold had five points in this Clemson run. Clemson extended its 26-19 lead by outscoring the Tar Heels 9-4 in the final 3:46 of play to take a 35-22 lead at the half. Clemson built a 17-point lead three times in the second half with the last time occurring at the 11:55 mark, as Glenney made a layup to make the score 50-33. North Carolina narrowed the lead to nine, 53-44 with 9:10 remaining as North Carolina went on an 11-3 run. Coretta Brown hit five points in the rally. Clemson responded and built a 14-point lead, 61-47 with 6:15 left. The Tar Heel's Juana Brown hit a three-point shot with 5:02 remaining, bringing the Tar Heels within nine of Clemson's lead (61-52), This would be the closest the Tar Heels would come, as Glenney responded with a layup with 4:58 remaining making the score 63-52. Clemson's largest lead of the game was 18 points as Glenney hit two free throws with :34 seconds left to make the score 75-57. For the game, Clemson shot 27-69 from the field for a .391 pct. North Carolina shot 21-55 from the floor for a .382 mark. Clemson outrebounded North Carolina 44-38 including a 15-8 edge on the offensive boards. Julie Alderhold had seven rebounds to lead the way for the Lady Tigers., Nuria Forns, Glenney, Erin Batth, and Krystal Scott all had six rebounds each. North Carolina was led in scoring and rebounding by LaQuanda Barksdale with 16 points and 11 rebounds. "We were worried about this game, having lost to North Carolina twice this season," said Clemson Head Coach Jim Davis. "However, we thought it was our turn. I thought we defended well in both halves. I am so proud of our team. I told our team that it was a team game and we demonstrated that today. I thought Marci Glenney did a great job on both ends of the floor." THE SERIES WITH N.C. STATE-This will be the 59th meeting between Clemson and N.C. State on the basketball court. N.C. State leads the overall series 36-22. Clemson and N.C. State split during the regular season as Clemson defeated N.C. State 67-52 on January 5, at Raleigh, NC. N.C. State defeated Clemson 56-50 at Clemson, SC on February 4. In this game, N.C. State went on a 16-0 run to finish the game. Under Head Coach Jim Davis, Clemson is 18-16 vs. N.C. State. In the ACC Tournament, N.C. State leads the series 6-4. However, Clemson has defeated N.C. State in the last four games when the two teams meet in the ACC Tournament. Clemson is also 3-1 vs. N.C. State when the Lady Tigers are the higher seeded team. BATTH AND FLOYD NAMED SECOND-TEAM ALL-ACC--Clemson Lady Tiger basketball players, Erin Batth and Chrissy Floyd were both named second-team All Atlantic Coast Conference as announced by the Atlantic Coast Sportswriters Association (ACSWA) Tuesday. LADY TIGERS ARE SEEDED SECOND IN ACC TOURNAMENT--Clemson is seeded second in this year's ACC Tournament. This is the second time Clemson has been seeded second in ACC Tournament history. BATTH NAMED TO THE ALL-ACC DEFENSIVE TEAM. Erin Batth was named to the ACC All-Defensive team. HEAD COACH JIM DAVIS REACHES 300 CAREER WINS WITH VICTORY OVER SOUTH
CAROLINA--Head Coach Jim Davis has a 298-136 record at Clemson as he is
in his 14th season. During his NCAA Division I career, he has a 317-144
record. Davis spent one season, 1986-87, at Middle Tennessee State and
compiled a 19-8 record with the Lady Raiders that season. Davis won his
300th career win with a 56-43 win over South Carolina on November 29, 2000.
DAVIS IS THE FIFTH WINNINGEST COACH IN ACC HISTORY-Head Coach Jim Davis is
the fifth all-time winningest coach in the history of the ACC with 298
victories. He is also fourth for most victories in ACC games with 131. He
is the fourth all-time winningest coach in the ACC by percentage (.686),
and he has the third best winning percentage in the ACC Tournament with
a .633 figure (19-11).
CLEMSON VS. RANKED TEAMS--Clemson Head Coach Jim Davis has defeated 48 top
25 teams since his arrival at Clemson in the 1987-88 season. This season
the Lady Tigers defeated third-ranked Duke on December 9, and ninth-ranked
Auburn on December 21. The Lady Tigers also defeated 16th-ranked N.C.

Clemson's all-time best rebounders. Currently she has 696 career rebounds

NURIA FORNS IS ONE OF CLEMSON'S BEST THREE-POINT SHOOTERS--Senior Nuria
Forns is one of Clemson's best ever three-point shooters. She is fourth
on the Clemson career list for most three-point field goals made with 90.
CLEMSON'S DEFENSE-Under Coach Jim Davis, the Clemson Lady Tigers have held
opponents to 50 points or less 62 times and have never allowed an opponent
to reach the 100-point plateau in regulation. North Carolina reached the
100-point mark in a double-overtime game on February 8, 2001. All 62 games
have resulted in Lady Tiger victories. The Lady Tigers have been held to
50 points or less only four times during Davis' tenure.
ERIN BATTH IS ONE OF CLEMSON'S BEST SHOT BLOCKERS--Erin Batth is fifth on
the Clemson career list for most blocked shots in a career.
CHRISSY FLOYD HAS SCORED IN DOUBLE FIGURES IN 27 GAMES--Chrissy Floyd has
scored in double digits in 27 of 28 games this season. She leads the
Lady Tigers in scoring with a 17.1 ppg. average. Erin Batth has scored
in double digits in 21 of the 28 games played this season.
CLEMSON A DANGEROUS TEAM FROM THE THREE-POINT LINE--Clemson has hit 135-372
from the three point line this season for a .363 figure. The Lady
Tigers are averaging 4.82 three-point field goals per game. Nuria Forns
is 33-83 from the three-point arc for a .398 pct. Julie Aderhold is 30-69
from the three point line for a .435 mark. Chrissy Floyd has been
successful from the three point line as she has hit 39-106 three point

average, sixth on the team. This year, Aderhold has played in all 28
games and is averaging 18.1 minutes per game. She is also averaging 3.0
rpg. She started her first career game in the Wake Forest game on January
11.
KRYSTAL SCOTT LEADS THE TEAM IN ASSISTS--Krystal Scott leads the team in
assists with 107. She has had five or more assists in 15 games this
season. She had a season-high seven assists in the Maryland game on
1-2-01 and in the North Carolina contest on 1-8-01. Chrissy Floyd is
second on the team in assists with 72.
BATTH IS ONE OF CLEMSON'S ALL-TIME CAREER SCORERS--Erin Batth has scored
940 career points. She is 20th on the Clemson's career list for most
points scored. She has scored 332 points this season. Floyd is
Clemson's 26th all-time leading career scorer with 859 points.
