Clemson, SC—Clemson Athletic Director Terry Don Phillips announced Friday that Head Basketball Coach Brad Brownell has agreed to a contract extension that will add a year to his previous contract and enhance his compensation package by 33 percent to over $1.2 million per year. His contract now runs through the 2016-17 season.

“We could not be more pleased with what Coach Brownell and his staff accomplished in his first year,” said Phillips. “He did a great job assembling a tremendous staff. I have worked with a National Championship program at Arkansas and a Final Four program at Oklahoma State, and I believe this staff is as good as I have been around. I was impressed with Brad in every phase of the program this year.”

Clemson finished Brownell’s first year with a 22-12 record, including a 9-7 ledger in the ACC. He established Clemson coaching records for total wins and ACC wins by a first-year coach. His nine ACC wins tied for the third most in league history for a first-year head coach, and the figure was four more ACC wins than any other first year Clemson head coach. The .647 overall winning percentage was the best by a first-year Clemson coach since the 1920-21 season.

In postseason play, the Tigers won an ACC Tournament game and an NCAA Tournament game in the same year for the first time since 1990. Clemson defeated UAB in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Tigers first NCAA Tournament win since 1997. Brownell was one of just four first-year Division I head coaches to take his team to the NCAA Tournament this year and the only first-year head coach to win an NCAA Tournament game.

Clemson was outstanding on the defensive end of the court, leading the league in scoring defense for the first time in 12 years. Clemson’s .402 field goal percentage defense was the best by a Clemson team since the 1958-59 season.
