Tigers Tumble in Latest Baseball Polls |
Baseball America Top 25 DURHAM, N.C. -- Mississippi State ascended to No. 1 in Baseball America's weekly college baseball rankings for the first time since March 1993 thanks to a 15-0 start. It marks the best start in school history for the Bulldogs, who won four times on the week and have tied the MSU record for consecutive wins. Former No. 1 Georgia Tech slipped to No. 5 after dropping a series at North Carolina State, which re-entered the rankings at No. 20. No. 2 Clemson fell to 10th after getting swept at Virginia, which makes its season debut in the Top 25 at No. 24. Cal State Fullerton has won eight straight games after sweeping Arizona, and the Titans rose to No. 4 in the rankings. Nebraska has won 11 consecutive games and moved into the Top 10 for the first time this season at No. 8. Florida moved up to ninth after winning a series against Arkansas. The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are through games of March 19 and do not include ties. FLORIDA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. - Florida St. (21-2) has been ranked No. 1 for the second time this season in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's poll of NCAA Division I baseball. The Seminoles won two of three at Virginia Tech over the past weekend and have been victorious in 18 of their last 19 games. Florida St. is 5-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Poll Notes: A number of teams have put together long winning streaks, including James Madison (16 in a row), Mississippi St. (15), Miami, Fla. (15), Kansas St. (15), Creighton (15), Nebraska (11) and Old Dominion (11). Another red-hot team has been Cal. St. Fullerton which has now won 17 of its last 20 games, including eight in a row. In key series last weekend, Virginia swept a 3-game set at home against Clemson, Kentucky took two of three at home against Louisiana St., North Carolina St. took two of three at home against Georgia Tech., Mississippi St. took two straight at home against Tennessee with the third game being rained out. Florida knocked off Arkansas two of three, and Wichita St. swept a 3-game series at Long Beach St. Five teams fell out of the top 30 this week in Long Beach St. (0-3), Pepperdine (2-1), Washington (0-2), Tulane (2-2) and Georgia (3-2). The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

Clemson went 1-3 last week, including a 10-5 win over Gardner-Webb on Wednesday and three losses at Virginia over the weekend by scores of 2-1, 10-2, and 7-4. In all three games at Virginia, the score was tied late in the game, however Virginia rallied for a victory each time. Clemson was the only ACC team not to be swept in a series last season. And since Boston College was swept at N.C. State last weekend, Clemson had the longest such streak of not being swept. However, the fact that Virginia outhit Clemson .370 to .175 and Virginia played outstanding defense, which included many stellar plays in the field, the Tigers were swept in a three-game series for the first time since 2004. Another telling stat was that in the first five innings combined, Clemson outscored Virginia 6-3. But in the last four innings combined, the Cavaliers outscored the Tigers 16-1. Tyler Colvin was a bright spot in the series, as he was 5-for-12 (.417) with a double, homer, and three RBIs against the Cavaliers. Herman Demmink's streak of reaching base via a hit or walk ended at 32 games during the series along with his 10-game hitting streak.
Clemson holds an overall record of 11-6 and ACC record of 0-3. Clemson's season batting average fell to .278 with a .361 on-base percentage. Taylor Harbin leads the club with a .340 average, while Colvin leads the team in both homers (5) and RBIs (14). Clemson's ERA stands at 2.65 with a .231 opponents' batting average. Josh Cribb leads the team with a 1.11 ERA, 4-0 record, and .167 opponents' batting average in 24.1 innings pitched. Clemson's opponents have continuously played good defense, as they have combined for a stellar .972 fielding percentage (only 17 errors in 17 games).
The Tigers will play their first of five straight, five-game weeks starting Tuesday. Clemson will host Elon for a two-game, midweek series before hosting N.C. State over the weekend.
