Tigers Take to the Road for Eight Games in 10 Days
CLEMSON - Jack Leggett's 10th-ranked Clemson baseball team takes to
the road for eight games in 10 days, including the first two series
in ACC play. The trip will take the Tigers to Maryland, Old Dominion
and Wake Forest.
Clemson, 11-5 this season, will play three games this weekend at
Maryland. The Tigers and Terrapins will play at 3:00 PM on Friday and
will then play at 1:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday. Then Clemson
travels to Norfolk, VA for two games March 20-21 at Old Dominion. The
Tigers conclude the trip with a three-game series March 23-25 at Wake
The Tigers are expected to start junior Steve Reba in Friday's game
at Maryland and follow with Ryan Childs, a sophomore from
Gaithersburg, MD, on Saturday. Reba is 3-0 on the year with a 2.45
ERA and has taken no hitters through 16.1 innings to start games this
season. He leads the team with 26 strike outs and has pitched 22.0
innings. Childs is 0-1 with a 6.43 ERA in 7.0 innings. The pitcher
for Sunday's game has yet to be determined.
Maryland is expected to throw Jared Stuart on Friday, Mark Martin on
Saturday and Steve Schmoll on Sunday. The Terrapins are 5-9 this
season after defeating Coppin State 16-1 on Wednesday.
Senior left fielder Casey Stone continues to lead the Clemson
offense. He is batting .435 this year with four doubles and 15 RBIs.
Stone was 4-5 with two RBIs in Wednesday's 9-3 win over Georgia
Southern. Sophomore Jeff Baker is the only other Tiger with a batting
average above .400. He is batting .409 with a team-best 25 RBIs and
seven home runs.
Last season Clemson played nine games in 11 days, but that trip was
not continuous as this year's trip will be. Since the Tigers are on
spring break, the team will travel by bus on the mini-tour of the
ACC. Clemson was 5-3 during the eight-game stretch away from Doug
Kingsmore Stadium a year ago. While the 2000 Tigers were 37-5 at
home, the team went 7-8 in the 15 road games. Clemson finished second
in the ACC regular season with a 17-7 record.
Clemson's next home game will be Tuesday, March 27 against Wofford at
7:15 PM at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
