Tigers Pound The Citadel

CLEMSON - Clemson's rebound from a 9-10 start to the current baseball season has been due in large part to its pitching. If Tuesday's offensive explosion is a sign the bats are rounding into shape as well, then look out.

The 17th-ranked Tigers pounded out 16 hits in a 13-4 victory over The Citadel Tuesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The win was Clemson's fifth in its last six games.

It was also the first of 14 consecutive home games for head coach Jack Leggett's team, a stretch which will go a long way toward helping determine Clemson's postseason fate.

"We've talked about it and they know how important these couple of weeks are," Leggett said. "Tonight was a good start. We swung the bats really well."

The Tigers (23-14) actually trailed 4-3 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but quickly erased that deficit by throwing up a five spot against Bulldogs' starter and loser Griff Beckham (1-2).

Third baseman Brad McCann highlighted the inning with a two-run home run, his ninth of the season, a blast that gave Clemson a 5-4 lead. Later, Tyler Colvin's single drove in two more runs in the inning. The fifth run scored on an error.

Clemson added three more runs in the sixth to blow it open, two scoring on a pinch single by John Ingram.

When it was all said and done, five Tigers - McCann, Kris Harvey, Lou Santangelo, Russell Triplett and Tony Sipp - had at least two hits for Leggett's team. Harvey had three, including a solo home run in the first inning.

McCann and Colvin each drove in three runs.

"We've been swinging the bats pretty well over the past 14-15 games, although we did run into some good pitching against North Carolina and Virginia," Leggett said. "The big thing about tonight was when they made a mistake we took advantage of it. We got a number of clutch hits after they committed an error and opened the door for us."

The breakout offensive performance aided a strong relief effort by redshirt junior Jeff Hahn.

Relieving Harvey with nobody out and one man on base in the fourth inning - with his team trailing at the time 4-2 - Hahn (2-0) proceeded to throw five innings of scoreless relief, allowing just four hits, walking two and striking out two.

"That was big. I haven't been pitching as well as I would like, so hopefully this will get me going," said Hahn. "The defense behind me was great tonight, and I was able to pitch ahead in the count for the most part. When you do that, you're going to have success."

Harvey was charged with all four Citadel (23-13) runs and allowed seven hits before being replaced by Hahn. Sophomore Adam Walker pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Clemson is back in action at 7:15 tonight, hosting Western Carolina. The Tigers then resume conference play with a three-game series vs. N.C. State Friday-Sunday, also at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
