Clemson, SC -

Clemson will open its 2007 baseball schedule as the #1 team in the country according to Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball, who released their weekly polls on Monday. The Tigers, who moved to the top spot after previous #1 Rice went 1-3 last week, will play host to George Mason in a three-game series starting Friday at 4:00 PM at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. There will not be another Sports Weekly poll released until later this month, as Clemson was ranked #2 in its preseason poll.

In 2006, Clemson also moved to #1 prior to playing its first game. Baseball America ranked the Tigers #2 in its preseason poll, but they jumped to #1 in its February 6 poll. The Tigers opened the season against James Madison on February 17.

TUCSON, Ariz. ? Clemson University (0-0) has been ranked No. 1 in the latest NCAA Division I baseball poll conducted by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

The Tigers moved up one spot after previously top ranked Rice dropped three of four games last week to Texas St., Vanderbilt and Texas A&M with a win against Baylor. The Owls (2-3) slipped to sixth this week.

Clemson will start its season this Friday at home against George Mason. The Tigers tied for fifth at the College World Series last season in rolling to a 53-16 overall record. Six position player starters return along with four superb pitchers. The team features three Louisville Slugger pre-season All-Americans in LHP closer Daniel Moskos (10 SV, 2.52 ERA), 1B Andy D'Alessio (23 HR, 85 RBI) and 2B Taylor Harbin (20 2B, 47 RBI).

Poll Notes: Several teams have been hot in the early going of the 2007 season. Arizona has won eight straight while defending national champion Oregon St. has captured seven in a row. Dating back to last season, Arizona has won 13 consecutive games. Over the past weekend, Oregon St. was impressive in sweeping a 3-game series at Georgia. Florida St. has rolled to a 6-0 record. Vanderbilt (3-0) posted three quality wins over the past weekend against top 20 teams Rice, Arizona St. and Baylor (ranked last week). Miami (Fla.), which started the season with two losses at home against Mercer, rebounded with a 3-game sweep at home against UCLA. Four teams fell out of the poll this week in Baylor (0-3), Georgia (0-3), Tennessee (2-4) and UCLA (2-4). Teams entering the poll this week are Southern California (5-3, which won two of three over highly regarded San Diego), Texas A&M (3-1, with a win over Rice), U.C. Riverside (5-1) and North Carolina St. (3-0).

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
