Tigers Fall to North Carolina

Clemson, SC - North Carolina scored three runs in the second and four in the third on its way to a 9-4 victory over Clemson Saturday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. North Carolina improved to 35-15 on the season and 12-7 in the ACC, while Clemson dropped to 33-17 and 10-9.

Tar Heel lefty starter Daniel Moore earned the victory, upping his record to 6-2. He scattered five hits and one run over 7.0 innings in the win. Tyler Lumsden suffered the loss for the Clemson, his first on the season.

Steve Farrell led off the second inning with a single to right field. Sammy Hewitt followed with a double down the right field line, advancing Farrell to third. After Chris Iannetta walked to load the bases, Ryan Blake singled to right field, driving in Farrell and advancing Hewitt and Iannetta. Hewitt then scored on Blair Waggett's single to the right side. Greg Mangum's single through the left side plated Iannetta.

The Tar Heels increased their lead to 7-0 in the third inning. Farrell reached on a bunt single to lead off the inning. Iannetta walked two batters later. Blake's single to right center scored Farrell and advanced Iannetta to second. Waggett reached and advanced to second on an error, driving in Ianetta and moving Blake to third. Blake and Waggett scored on Mangum's single to left field.

North Carolina tacked on another run in the fourth on a couple of singles to take an 8-0 lead. Farrell singled through the left side, advanced to second on Hewitt's single, and scored on Blake's single to left field.

Clemson got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Michael Johnson singled up the middle. After a walk to Brad McCann, Jeff Hourigan's single advanced both runners. Johnson scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Frank.

The Tar Heels scored their ninth run in the top of the eighth. Pinch hitter Chase Younts led off with a single up the middle. After Mangum's single advanced Younts to third, he scored when Chad Prosser grounded into a double play.

North Carolina had 15 hits, 14 of which were singles. Mangum and Blake each went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Farrell also had three hits and scored three runs.

The Tigers scored another run in the bottom of the eighth after Russell Triplett lead off the inning with a double down the left field and scored on Hourigan's blooper to right center.

Clemson added two more runs in the ninth for a final of 9-4 Pinch hitter Herman Demmink singled up the middle. David Slevin, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games in the fifth, singled to left center. Demmink scored on Triplett's single up the middle. Johnson then singled to left center to drive in Slevin.

The Tigers and Tar Heels clash for game two of the series Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
