Tigers Fall Out of Two of Three Baseball Polls

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Poll

TUCSON, Ariz. — With wins in 11 of its last 12 games, Stanford University is No. 1 in this week's Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Cardinal (35-6) is off to its second-best record in school history after 41 games, ranking only behind the 35-5-1 mark posted by the 1967 club.

In the process of sweeping three straight games at home against Washington St. over the past weekend, Stanford extended its home winning streak to 13 and won its 20th game in a row versus Washington St. dating back to the last Cougar win during the 1978 season.

Texas, ranked No. 1 the previous three weeks, lost two of three at Missouri during the past weekend and fell to second in this week's poll.

Poll Notes: Several other teams are red-hot. East Carolina has won 19 consecutive games, a school record. Georgia is now on a roll with nine straight wins. Georgia Tech., Florida and Texas Tech. have each won six straight. Two new teams to the poll this week are Arizona St. and Cal. St. Fullerton. The Sun Devils knocked off Wichita St. twice last week in Wichita and have won seven of their last nine contests. The Titans are playing superb baseball lately with wins in 13 of their last 15 games as they lead the Big West Conference with an 11-1 record. Two teams fell out of the poll this week in U.C. Irvine (2-2) and Auburn (1-3). Irvine lost two of three against Cal. St. Northridge, a team that is only 15-30 on the season. The wins by Northridge were its first two in Big West Conference action as the Matadors ran their conference mark to 2-10. Auburn lost three straight at Florida and now sits in ninth place in the Southeastern Conference with a 9-12 league record.

Baseball America's College Top 25

DURHAM, N.C. - Stanford reclaimed the top spot in Baseball America's Top 25 weekly college baseball rankings by sweeping a series from Washington State. Texas dropped to No. 2 after three weeks atop the poll after dropping a series at Missouri.

Arkansas defeated Tennessee to win its sixth consecutive Southeastern Conference series and moved into the Top 10 for the first time since 1999.

The team's No. 8 ranking is its highest since peaking at No. 3 during the 1990 season.

Florida moved up to No. 12 after handing Auburn its first sweep since 2002. The Gators have won eight straight SEC games.

Three unranked teams forced their way into the poll this week. Arizona State, which climbed as high as No. 8 before losing four straight home series, won two games on the road against Wichita State to earn spot No. 20.

Fellow Pacific-10 member Washington ranks one spot behind the Sun Devils at No. 21 after winning its fourth conference series of the year.

Oklahoma State won two of three games from Oklahoma in the Bedlam Series to make its season debut in the poll at No. 23.

The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are through games of May 2 and do not include ties.
