Tigers Drop 8-6 Decision to Elon

by -

CLEMSON, SC - Elon scored four unearned runs with two outs in the eighth inning to rally for an 8-6 victory over top-ranked Clemson. Elon improved to 30-19 while dropping the Tigers to 40-9.

Ross Cook (1-0) pitched two innings of one-hit relief to get the win for Elon in just his second appearance of the year. Matt Garner earned his third save of the season. Jeff Hourigan (0-2) faced only two batters but got the loss for Clemson.

After the first pitch was delayed one hour and 19 minutes due to rain, Elon staked an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. After getting behind 0-2, Brian Ingram walked to start the game and moved to second on Jason Tuttle's single. Whit Bryant then drove in one run with a double to the gap in right center that put runners on second and third with no outs. Clemson starter B.J. LaMura retired the next few batters but then threw a wild pitch that allowed Tuttle to score.

The Phoenix added two runs in the third. Ingram once again walked to lead off the inning and scored on a triple by Tuttle. Jim Swenson then doubled in Tuttle to give Elon a 4-0 advantage.

Clemson finally broke into the scoring column in the fourth inning. Khalil Greene led off the frame with his 20th double of the season and his 82nd as a Tiger, which tied the ACC career record. After play was halted to acknowledge the accomplishment, Greene waved to the crowd and scored three pitches later on Michael Johnson's single through the right side.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth, Johnson came through again with a double down the first base line that brought the Tigers to within 4-3.Clemson took its first lead in sixth when Zane Green tripled down the first base line to drive in two runs and put the Tigers on top 5-4. Meanwhile, Hahn held the Elon offense back in the middle innings. The freshman pitched 5.1 innings, yielding no runs off of five hits while walking two and striking out four.

Elon knotted the game at five in the eighth inning when David Slevin's throwing error allowed pinch runner Chris Maggi to score. Clemson reliever Tyler Lumsden then walked Ingram and yielded two straight hits as Elon took an 8-5 lead.

The Tigers came back with one run in the bottom of the eighth. Pinch hitter L.J. DeMaino tripled to lead off the inning and scored on Kyle Frank's sacrifice fly. The Tigers put runners on first and second with two outs but Garner struck out Jeff Baker to end the threat.

Clemson will next travel to Virginia to take on the Cavaliers for a three-game set starting Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM and the game will be televised by Fox Sports Net South.
