CLEMSON - Clemson's propensity for leaving runners on base is causing head
coach Jack Leggett to lose sleep, he admitted Saturday night.
Perhaps he slept somewhat better after his Tigers scored a 5-3 victory over
Wake Forest Saturday at Doug Kingsmore. One night after stranding 15 runners
in a 4-2 series-opening loss, Clemson pushed across just enough runs despite
leaving 10 more on base.
"Ten is better than 15," he said. "Maybe (today) it will be five. We've just
hit a little lull where we're not playing as well as we have been, but we're
still winning most of our games. But leaving that many runners on is
frustrating, at least for me."
Top-ranked Clemson (37-6, 11-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) pushed across three
runs in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. An RBI single by catcher Seth
Miller and a run-scoring triple by Roberto Valiente highlighted the inning.
Wake Forest scored twice in the sixth inning off starter and winner B.J.
LaMura to pull within 4-2.
Clemson made it 5-2 in the bottom of the inning when Khalil Greene walked
with the bases loaded. Stephen Ghutzman's solo homer off reliever Thomas
Boozer in the seventh provided the No. 3 Demon Deacons (36-7, 15-4) with
their final run.
Ghutzman's blast was the only run Boozer allowed in 3 1/3 innings of relief.
His performance saved the Clemson bullpen until Legget inserted Patrick Hogan
with one out in the ninth inning to face the final two batters.
Hogan retired both for the save.
"Boozer was big for us tonight," Leggett said. "He gave up five hits, but he
spaced them out well and only gave up the one run on the solo homer. Those
don't beat you. It's the home runs with runners on base that beat you."
The teams close out the three-game series at 2 p.m. today. Clemson freshman
Tyler Lumsden will get the start, the first lefthander to start a game for
the Tigers this season.
