Tigers Blank Terriers 6-0 in Spartanburg

Spartanburg, SC -

Every Tiger starter had at least one hit and Kris Harvey pitched 5.0 shutout innings to lead #25 Clemson to a 6-0 win at Wofford Wednesday at newly renovated Russell C. King Field. The meeting marked Clemson's first game at Wofford since 1977. A record crowd of 2,131 was on hand to see the Tigers improve to 5-5, while the Terriers fell to 6-2.

Harvey (3-0) allowed just four singles and two walks while striking out seven to earn the win. In 16.0 innings pitched this year, Harvey has yet to allow an extra base hit. Wofford starter Charles Vartanian (1-1) suffered the loss.

The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Travis Storrer reached and advanced to third base when left fielder David Dufour dropped a high fly ball. Two batters later, Storrer scored on a slow, ground-ball single up the middle by Lou Santangelo. It was Santangelo's first RBI of the season that did not come on a home run.

After getting out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the first, Clemson responded with two runs in the second inning. Tyler Colvin led off with a sharp single through the right side on a 1-2 pitch. Russell Triplett followed with a single to right-center that was booted by centerfielder Zach Pittman. Colvin came all the way around to score, while Triplett advanced to third. Herman Demmink followed with an RBI groundout to give Clemson a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers added to the lead in the third inning. Brad McCann led off with a single through the left side, advanced to third on Santangelo's line-drive single to center, and scored on Collin Mahoney's single through the left side.

In the fourth inning, the Tigers upped their lead to 5-0 when Tony Sipp lined a two-out single to right, scoring Triplett. Triplett led off the inning with a double down the left-field line. Triplett, the seventh batter in the order, led the Tigers with three hits and two doubles.

Clemson added an insurance run in the seventh inning. McCann led off with a double down the left-field line. Three batters later, he scored when Anthony Dinardo booted a sharp ground ball by Colvin. He actually stopped the ball, but failed at least three times to pick up the ball in front of him.

Clemson will play host to #7 Auburn this weekend in a three-game series at Doug Kingsmore Stadium beginning Friday at 4:00 PM.
