Three-Run Seventh Lifts Clemson Past Wolfpack

CLEMSON - For a long time it looked like more of the same old story.

Despite a sterling pitching performance by D.J. Mitchell, there was Clemson entering the late innings trailing 2-0 - again a victim of its own defense.

But Saturday night the Tigers would rally. Clemson scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh and Matt Vaughn closed out things with two scoreless innings, lifting Jack Leggett's team to a 3-2 victory over North Carolina State.

The game was played before an announced crowd of over 4,200 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The game was scoreless heading into the sixth inning, but the Wolfpack (13-6, 4-4 ACC) scratched out two unearned runs off Mitchell. It was Mitchell himself who committed the costliest of Clemson's two errors in the inning, fielding a slow roller up the third base line and throwing wide of catcher Doug Hogan at the plate trying to nail a runner at home.

Ultimately two runs scored on the play and the Wolfpack led 2-0.

But Clemson (13-7, 3-5 ACC) rallied in the seventh off 'Packer starter and loser Clayton Shunick (2-2). Mike Freeman and John Hinson had back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game, and the go-ahead run scored on a double play ground out by J.D. Burgess.

Matt Vaughn closed it out for the Tigers, picking up his sixth save by retiring six of the seven batters he faced.

Mitchell improved to 2-2 with the win, allowing no earned runs over seven innings, walking just one and striking out five.

Shunick struck out a career high nine for State.

The teams will play the finale of the three game series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
