Game 9 Quotes: Cal State Fullerton vs. Clemson

Rosenblatt Stadium, Omaha, Neb.

Tuesday, June 20, 2006

Cal State Fullerton Head Coach George Horton (opening statement): “First off, I want to commend Clemson. They are a good ball club. It’s obvious to me why they were the No. 1 seed and won the ACC. We are just delighted to stay alive. Ryan Paul got to the game in the seventh inning and barely made it from the bullpen to the mound. As you know, our guys don’t quit. We found a way to be on top.”

(about Lauren Gagnier): “I didn’t think he pitched that poorly. Some of those base hits were good pitches. I thought his stuff was good. It was more of a mental performance than physical.”

Cal State Fullerton Pitcher Wes Roemer (about his performance): “It’s a big difference to start and close. It’s a really tough thing to do. I made sure to get my breath and pitch with confidence.”

Cal State Fullerton Starting Pitcher Lauren Gagnier (about pitching to Clemson): “They are a good hitting ball club; I need to tip my cap to them. I haven’t been hit that hard all year. Our offense had some timely hits and our bullpen hasn’t been used that much.”

Cal State Designated Hitter David Cooper (about his performance as a freshman): “We work really hard in the fall through January. The seniors are like my older brothers. They taught me a lot. It’s good for them to live another day.”

Clemson Head Coach Jack Leggett (opening statement): “Obviously it was a tough loss. We’ve had two tough ones in the last two days. It’s going to take us a while to recover. We had some big hits along the way. A couple more would have really helped.”

(about hitting for D.J. Mitchell in the bottom of the 9th): “Ben Hall has been clutch for us all season. No regrets there. He is a senior and has the experience. We had to keep battling all game. We relinquished the lead and had to battle back again. We had a tremendous season. We had a lot of great players on this team. I was proud of how they worked and battled.”

(about whether Andy D’Alessio missed a bunt sign in the 9th inning): “We felt he has been too hot of a hitter for us to give up an out right there.”

(about P.J. Zocchi): “We wouldn’t have been in that game without 5 innings of great relief from him.”

Clemson Designated Hitter Herman Demmink (about how this team will be thought of in the future): “This has been one of the most prolific teams this school has ever had, I think. This team put it all on the field, every inning, every game.”

(about his hit): “In the 7th inning I was up with two outs and the bases loaded, and I had a good pitch to hit. I just couldn’t get it hard enough.”

Clemson Starting Pitcher Jason Berken (about his start): “Early I fell behind. I gave up some hits. I couldn’t really get it going. I didn’t pitch well today. I wish I could have given our team a better chance to win.”

Clemson Relief Pitcher P.J. Zocchi (about home run to David Cooper in the 7th inning): “I didn’t feel I was tired. I missed completely down the middle. That was a turning point for us.”
