CLEMSON, SC -- Clemson coach Jack Leggett knows he can't make a living pulling his starting pitcher in the second inning.
He didn't hesitate Friday night, though, with Kevin Lynn in the bullpen.

Lynn pitched 7 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to lead Clemson (49-16) to an 11-4 win over Mississippi State (41-19) in front of a Doug Kingsmore Stadium-record crowd of 6,308 in the first game of the teams' best-of-three super regional.

"I'll sleep pretty well tonight," said Leggett, who saw Lynn pitch 5 1/3 innings of relief in the regional last weekend against Illinois. When starter Ryan Mottl gave up three runs in the second inning, Leggett quickly went to Lynn.

Lynn came in with two men on and got the final out of the second. He allowed just three hits and no runs over the next seven innings.

"The situation was tough," said Lynn (5-1). "I had to make pitches and pick the team up. The helped me by chasing some pitches for me."

Clemson took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Casey Stone led off the game with a single, stole second and then was driven in with a double by Patrick Boyd.

After Khalil Greene was hit by a pitch, Jeff Baker drove in Boyd with a hit that took a bad hop past shortstop Matt Maniscalco. Mike Calitri's sacrifice fly drove in Greene to give Clemson a 3-0 lead.

Mississippi State responded by sending nine batters to the plate to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the second.

Mottl loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter. With two outs, he walked Matt Maniscalco to force in Ty Martin from third. Shane Kelly hit a ground ball under the glove of third baseman Khalil Greene to drive in two more runs. The next batter Phillip Willingham hit a single up the middle to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead and chase Mottl. Travis Chapman, the first batter to face Lynn, grounded out to end the inning.

"We got a tremendous relief appearance from Kevin Lynn," said Leggett. "He put on a clinic about what a relief specialist is supposed to do."

Lynn settled in and Clemson settled down and eventually took control of the game. In the fifth Clemson sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six to take a 9-4 lead. Patrick Boyd and Khalil Greene singled and Jeff Baker was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ryan Riley drove in Boyd with a sacrifice fly to short right field. Mike Calitri then hit a fly ball to centerfielder Shane Kelley.

Kelley didn't see the ball and it dropped between him and Willingham in right center.

"I didn't know which way to go," said Kelly. "Phillip (Willingham) was running my way so I started looking for the ball and I didn't see it until it got 10 or 15 feet off the ground."

Greene and Baker both scored and Calitri ended up at second.

Calitri scored on a single by the next batter Justin Singleton. Bradley LeCroy, who reached on a walk, and Singleton both scored on a single by Casey Stone that dropped in front of Kelley to give Clemson a 9-3 lead.

Clemson added runs in the seventh and the eighth.

The two teams play again on Saturday at 7 p.m. A win by Clemson sends the Tigers to the College World Series. A win by the Bulldogs sends the series to a third game Sunday at 2 p.m.

"Nothing has come easy for our ball club this season," said Bulldog coach Pat McMahon.
