Hogan Plays Longball Twice (Again) In Clemson Rout Of Paladins, 14-2

CLEMSON - The extra work Doug Hogan has been doing in the batting cage is beginning to pay dividends.

The Clemson catcher homered twice for the second straight game - one of them a grand slam - leading the Tigers past Furman Thursday evening, 14-2. The game was played before an announced crowd of 3,891 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Before the game, head coach Jack Leggett said that center fielder Addison Johnson will be out at least three more weeks with an injured wrist. Johnson, who has yet to play this season, initially was sidelined because of a hamstring injury.

But during his recovery from that setback, Johnson hurt the wrist on his right (non-throwing) hand. It was thought the damage was limited to a sprained ligament, but further tests early this week showed a small stress fracture in one of the bones on the top of the hand.

"We just have to be very careful with him," Leggett said. "If we're not, he could re-injure the wrist and maybe miss the whole season."

Once the game got underway, it was Hogan and freshman pitcher Craig Gullickson who stole the show.

While Gullickson (2-0) was pitching six shutout innings, Hogan backed him with two more home runs - his sixth and seventh of the season. The first was a screaming line drive down the left field line that was just fair for a grand slam that put his team ahead 8-0.

His second, a two-run shot an inning later, was a high, majestic shot to straight-away left. The six RBIs give Hogan a team-leading 25 on the season.

Clemson initially got on the board in the third inning on a two-out, two-run single by Jeff Schaus. Kyle Parker followed with another hit to drive in a run, making it 3-0.

Meanwhile, Gullickson was cruising along. In his longest outing of the season, the lefty walked just two while striking out eight. His six-inning outing allowed Leggett to save most of his bullpen for the three-game series vs. N.C. State, which begins with a 6 p.m. game Friday.

The Tigers improved to 12-6 on the season, while Furman fell to 10-6.

Justin Holloway (1-2) was the losing pitcher.
