Cribb's Six-Hit Shutout Leads Clemson to Victory Over VT

by - Correspondent -

BLACKSBURG, Va. - With its margin for error shrinking by the day, Clemson turned in a much-needed solid performance Monday night at Virginia Tech.

Righthander Josh Cribb fired a six-hit shutout, recording his first complete game of the season and leading the Tigers to a 7-0 win over the Hokies at English Field in Blacksburg, Va.

Cribb struck out six and walked just one, throwing just 118 pitches to improve to 4-4 on the season. Lefty Ryan Kennedy (5-6) suffered the defeat.

Clemson (29-19, 14-9 ACC) snapped the scoreless tie in the fifth inning by playing small ball.

With Stan Widmann at third base and one out, Herman Demmink put down a perfect bunt on the suicide squeeze for the first run of the game. Demmink was safe at first on the play, as well, and he moved to second when Brad Chalk dropped a bunt single down the first base line.

Taylor Harbin followed with a double to right field, scoring Demmink and moving Chalk around the third. Chalk scored moments later to make it 3-0 on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Colvin.

The Tigers added four more in the ninth on a two-run home run by catcher Adrian Casanova, his third of the season, and a two-run single from Tyler Colvin.

All that remained was for Cribb to shut the door. That he did, pitching out of a two-on, one-out jam in the ninth to preserve the shutout.

Virginia Tech falls to 20-22 overall, 5-14 in the ACC.

The teams close out the three-game series tonight in Blacksburg. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
