pitched 7.0 strong innings to lead Clemson to a 9-2 victory over Boston College in front of 1,342 fans in the second game of a doubleheader at a cold and windy Commander Shea Field on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers, who swept the series 3-0, improved to 22-13 overall and 9-9 in the ACC. The Eagles fell to 13-20 overall and 6-11 in ACC play.

The Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the first inning before the Eagles scored two runs in the second inning. But the Tigers scored single runs in the third and sixth innings before putting the game out of reach with four runs in the eighth inning.




Meyer (3-0) pitched a career-long 7.0 innings to earn the win. The San Diego, CA native allowed five hits, two runs, and one walk with seven strikeouts. Scott Weismann Scott Weismann

reached on a fielder’s choice as Stolz scored to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead.

In the eighth inning, Hinson reached with one out when centerfielder Tom Bourdon dropped a flyball. Pohl was intentionally walked, then Schaus ripped a single to right field to score Hinson. Shaffer followed with a double to left field to score Pohl, then Miller laced a double to left-center to score Schaus and Shaffer. Shaffer’s double extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Pohl went 3-for-5 with two runs and a walk to lead the Tigers, who had 12 hits despite strong winds between 15-25 miles per hour blowing in from left field all weekend. Miller went 2-for-4 with a double and game-high three RBIs.

Matt McGovern had a team-high two hits for Boston College, who had six hits in the game.

Clemson will travel to Athens, GA to face Georgia on Wednesday at 7:00 PM. The game will be televised live by CSS.


Game 1: Tigers Top Boston College 7-5 in Game-One of Doubleheader Saturday

Clemson scored two runs in the sixth inning to tie the score and broke the 3-3 tie with four runs in the seventh inning in its 7-5 win over Boston College in the first game of a doubleheader at Commander Shea Field on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers, who took a 2-0 lead in the series, improved to 21-13 overall and 8-9 in the ACC. The Eagles dropped to 13-19 overall and 6-10 in ACC play.

Eagle starter John Leonard (4-4) suffered the loss. He gave up 10 hits, six runs (five earned), and no walks with six strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched.

The Eagles grabbed the game’s first lead in the first inning. Brad Zapenas led off with a walk. Two batters later, Garret Smith doubled down the left-field line to score Zapenas.

In the top of the third inning, John Hinson lined a one-out single to right-center and moved to third on Phil Pohl’s single through the left side. Jeff Schaus followed with a sacrifice fly to left to score Hinson.


Tom Bourdon led off the bottom of the third inning with a double over the third-base bag on a 1-2 pitch, then Zapenas lined a single to center to move Bourdon to third. Two batters later, Smith laced a one-out double to left-center to plate Bourdon. Anthony Melchionda hit a grounder to Hinson at third as Zapenas broke for home. Hinson’s throw home was in the dirt, allowing Zapenas to score on the throwing error.

The Tigers rallied in the sixth inning to tie the score. Schaus belted a one-out single to right-center and Richie Shaffer singled through the left side to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Both runners moved up another base on the play when Zapenas booted the ball. Brad Miller’s groundout to second plated Schaus, then Will Lamb lined a two-out double to right-center to score Shaffer and tie the score.


Clemson took its first lead of the game in the seventh inning. Jason Stolz hit a one-out double to left-center and scored on Hinson’s single to right field. After Hinson stole second and third, Pohl blooped a single to right-center to plate Hinson. Pohl advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on Schaus’ single to right field. Shaffer then belted a double to left-center to score Pohl and Schaus, giving Clemson a 7-3 lead.


In the eighth inning, Matt McGovern led off with a single to right field and scored on Smith’s double to left-center. Melchionda blooped a single to center to move Smith to third, then Andrew Lawrence grounded a single through the right side to plate Smith. But Haselden retired the next three Eagles and the Tigers maintained a 7-5 lead.


Pohl led Clemson’s 14-hit attack by going 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Smith went 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs to pace Boston College, who had 10 hits in the contest.

Clemson and Boston College will play the second game of the doubleheader and series-finale at approximately 3:35 PM.
