Clemson Still Ranked in Collegiate Baseball Poll |
Clemson University Overall Season Record: 32-21 ACC Regular-Season Record: 12-9 Last Week: 2-3 W home vs. Furman, 16-5 W home vs. College of Charleston, 19-8 L away vs. #15 Georgia Tech, 8-3 L away vs. #15 Georgia Tech, 11-3 L away vs. #15 Georgia Tech, 8-4 Notes: Clemson went 2-3 last week, with four of the five games against teams ranked in the top 30 by Collegiate Baseball. Clemson scored 35 runs in wins over Furman and College of Charleston, but was swept by a red-hot Georgia Tech team in Atlanta over the weekend. Against Furman Tuesday, the Tigers scored 11 combinedd runs in the seventh and eighth innings to runaway with a 16-5 win. The Tigers hit a season-high seven doubles, including two each by Tony Sipp and Garrick Evans. The following night, the Tigers exploded for eight runs in the second inning and blew out College of Charleston 19-8. Brad McCann was 6-for-6 with a double, three singles, two home runs, four runs scored, and six RBIs against the Cougars. One of the homer was a grand slam on an 0-2 pitch. He tied the school record for hits in a game, becoming the first Tiger with six hits since 1992. Clemson hit six more doubles in the game. Against Georgia Tech, Clemson committed nine errors, leading to nine unearned runs, and had just one run-scoring hit in 26 at-bats with runners in scoring position in being outscored 27-10. Georgia Tech upped its overall and ACC winning streaks to 13 games. Lou Santangelo hit two of the team's five homers in the series. On the week, McCann was 8-for-10 with eight runs scored, a double, two homers, eight RBIs, two walks, and a hit by pitch in just over two games. He was hit by a pitch in game one at #15 Georgia Tech and never saw action again in the series, as he had a bruised arm. McCann's status is day-to-day. He upped his season batting average to .388 thanks to his impressive week. Freshmen Andy D'Alessio and Tyler Colvin continue to impress. D'Alessio was 8-for-17 (.471) with four walks and Colvin was 6-for-14 (.429) with two doubles and his first career homer. D'Alessio leads the team in ACC games with a .371 batting average, while Colvin is second with a .365 average. No other Tiger is hitting .300 in ACC play. The Tigers hit .332 on the week along with 20 doubles and seven home runs, but committed 14 errors.
Clemson will conclude its ACC and regular-season schedule with a three-game series at Duke starting Thursday at 7:00 PM. The Tigers will practice at 1:00 PM Tuesday (interviews from 12:30 to 1:00). Clemson will practice Wednesday in the late morning to early afternoon and depart for Durham after practice. The team has Monday off.
COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Stanford is No. 1 in this week's Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Cardinal, 39-9 overall, is in first place in the Pac-10 Conference with a 12-5 league mark. Last week, Stanford beat Santa Clara and split two games at Arizona. The Cardinal is hitting .331 as a team with 84 home runs in 48 games along with 80 doubles and 16 triples. The offense is averaging nine runs a game. Texas, ranked No. 1 last week, lost two games at home to North Carolina St. during the past weekend and fell to second in this week's poll. Poll Notes: Several teams have been on a roll lately. Notre Dame has won nine in a row, Georgia Tech. 13 straight, Arizona St. 7 consecutive, South Carolina 7 in a row and Southern Mississippi six straight. Two teams fell out of the poll this week in College of Charleston and Birmingham Southern. Two new teams to the poll this week are Big 12 Conference teams Texas Tech (34-17) and Texas A&M (38-15). The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK RHP Ryan Zink, Illinois-Chicago: Zink became the 10th pitcher in Illinois-Chicago history to hurl a no-hitter as he blanked Youngstown State, 7-0 while striking out 10 batters in a 7-inning contest. It was the first no-hitter at the school since the 1997 season. Earlier in the week, Zink tossed three innings of scoreless relief in a 9-3 win over Northwestern. For the week, he pitched in 10 innings, allowed one hit and struck out 11. RHP Mike Rogers & RHP Vern Sterry, North Carolina St.: Rogers and Sterry each pitched complete-game 3-hit shutouts against the Texas Longhorns at Disch-Falk field in Austin, Tex. Rogers won the first game, 2-0 while Sterry took the nightcap, 1-0. The sweep was the first time in the 108-year history of Texas baseball that the Longhorns were blanked in both ends of a doubleheader. Rogers struck out 10, walked one and allowed three hits. Sterry struck out 11, walked two and allowed only three hits. LHP/OF Brian Bogusevic, Tulane: Bogusevic had a remarkable week on the mound and on offense for the Green Wave. He hit two home runs and collected 8 RBI in three games against St. Louis as he went 7-for-13 at the plate. One of the home runs was a walk-off grand slam to cap a 13-9 win. He also earned a win on the mound as he tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts while walking one in eight innings. 3B Brad McCann, Clemson: McCann was 8-for-10 with 8 runs scored, 2 homers, a double and 8 RBIs in three games last week. He tied a Clemson record when he went 6-for-6 with a double, three singles, two home runs, four runs scored and six RBIs. One of the homers was a grand slam on an 0-2 pitch. He reached base in 11 of his 13 plate appearances as he had an .846 on-base percentage.
Baseball America's College Top 25 DURHAM, N.C. - Stanford and Texas flip-flopped spots in Baseball America's Top 25 weekly college baseball rankings for the third consecutive week with the Cardinal breaking on top this time. The marks Stanford's third ascension to No. 1 this year, and its ninth week there overall. Mississippi forced its way back in the Top 10 at No. 9 by sweeping Florida in Gainesville. That gave the Rebels a 17-10 conference record, which is tied with No. 12 Arkansas and No. 23 Georgia for the league's best record. The Gators dropped to No. 13. Georgia Tech jumped four spots in the rankings by winning a game against Georgia and then sweeping Clemson. The No. 21 Yellow Jackets have won a school-record 13 games in a row in the Atlantic Coast Conference and have won 13 straight overall. The can capture the ACC title by sweeping Maryland this weekend. Cal State Fullerton went to UC Irvine and swept the Anteaters to push back into the Top 25 for the first time since March 1. The No. 22 Titans opened the season at No. 3 but fell out the rankings after a 15-16 start. North Carolina held Miami to five runs - three earned - in winning two out of three in Coral Gables, Fla., to reappear in the rankings at No. 25. The Hurricanes lost their first series of the season and slipped to No. 6. Lousiana State and South Carolina moved up to Nos. 4 and 5 with Southeastern Conferences series wins.
