Clemson Pounds Paladins

by - Correspondent -

CLEMSON - If the cold weather and light rain couldn't stymie Clemson's bats Wednesday afternoon, Furman's pitching had almost no chance.

The Tigers pounded out eight hits and 10 runs inside the first three innings Wednesday, rolling to an 11-1 win over the visiting Paladins at Doug Kingsmore stadium. The game was played in 42-degree temperatures - with a wind-chill factor near 35 degrees - and an on again, off again drizzle.

But it couldn't have come at a better time for the Tigers (6-7).

The win snapped a three-game losing streak, the last two coming at the hands of South Carolina last weekend, and gives Jack Leggett's team some semblance of momentum heading into the ACC-opening series this weekend vs. North Carolina.

Sophomore righthander Stephen Faris (1-0) was the beneficiary of the offensive support, pitching five scoreless innnings, striking out four and not walking a batter. David Kopp, Daniel Moskos, Robert Rohrbaugh and Drew Fiorenza each pitched an inning in relief.

Moskos surrendered the only Furman (7-9) run, a long home run to right field by losing pitcher Case Cassedy (3).

Clemson opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Andy D'Alessio stroked a two-out, three-run double to the wall in right-center. The Tigers added six more runs in the second inning, the big hit being Kris Harvey's third home run of the year - a three-run shot the opposite way to right-center.

Ben Hall later added a solo home run for the Tigers, his first of the year. Freshmen Brad Chalk and Stan Widmann each had three hits on the afternoon.

Cassedy had two hits for Furman. He would have had three, stroking what appeared to be a leadoff double in the second inning. But, on appeal, Cassedy was called out for missing first base on the play

Clemson welcomes North Carolina to Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Friday for the first of a three-game weekend series. Friday's first pitch is set for 7 p.m., Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
